Seascape from Knuckles Chaotix is a track that always makes me feel nostalgic and sad. I found out about Chaotix back when I was around 9 or so, and Seascape was instantly my favorite song off of the OST. My home life at the time was pretty bad, so I whenever I felt tired, or just wanted to chill for a bit, I'd go back to that song. It was sort of an escape for me, a calming release. Whenever I heard it, I imagined myself standing out on a pier at night, watching as ships sailed past, their lights reflecting off the cool water. Besides, it was just a catchy and fun song to listen to. I remember listening to it when I did all kinds of other stuff, but most notably, whenever I played this online MMO with a few friends I had at the time. They were just a bunch of other kids like me, but we all had fun together, and we were all Sonic fans too. I even had a small crush on one of them. They were my only friends back then. I don't know them anymore, we all went our separate ways abruptly. I wish I could've known them longer. Whenever I listen to Seascape now, I think back on those days. I think about those friends I had, the fun we had together, the memories we made. I think about the nights I spent trying to calm myself down, listening to my family argue day after day, and feeling like my whole world was collapsing. And I still imagine that pier at night, that calming open sea, and those bright ships in the distance. It's a surreal feeling, one I welcome as much as I hate. It comforts me, yet makes me feel this almost unbearable longing. I'm not sure what for, though. Oh, and Labyrinth Zone has the most infuriating song ever. It's not even because of the level itself, the song just sounds super fucking annoying. If it was a person, I'd punch it.

Ouranos Island's theme from Frontiers actually has been an earworm for me. It's so transcendent and serene, and sounds more like something from a NieR game than Sonic. I also love the music from Black Knight that plays during the scene where Sonic confronts Merlina as the Dark Queen. The sonic mega collection extras music hits me in a primal part of my brain, I spent hours as a kid sitting at that screen looking at all the comic covers. My mom was the best and she introduced me to sonic at just the right age and I’ll never forget the times I sat in her room playing the mega collection with her watching me. Whenever I would get an extra life she’d say “you got a new guy” and as kid I thought I unlocked a new character like shadow to play as haha. She would get me every new sonic game that came out, it’s like she knew how important it was to me. I remember watching gremlins in our living room and my mom came home with sonic unleashed as it came out just that week, I’m not sure if anyone is old enough to remember but back in the day if you left a game on the title screen it would play a mini movie/trailer, for sonic unleashed I believe it played its E3 trailer and plays endless possibilities, every time I’d boot up the game I’d let that trailer play to hear that song. Whenever I hear it now I actually cry a bit, not because I’m sad, but I realize how thankful I am to have had such an amazing childhood, that song ignites such a special feeling in me, my mom did an amazing job raising me without my dad around and sonic was always there for me. 10:58 You wouldn't understand the pain I went through, being super hyped that after all this time SplashDash will finally talk about the beautiful, amazing game that is Sonic Unleashed, specifically about the music no less, and then Sonic '06 snatched it right from beneath me. Fire vid tho keep up the great work dude

Something similar happens with the music of the end in Sonic 2 after defeating the last boss. It feels like it's all over, you defeated Eggman, a victorious triumph. That adding the cinematics before the credits ........ It's beautiful.

Mortar Canyon is absolutely great. A great blend of synth, orchestra, and the piano. It's a shame you didn't put it in here but It's mortar canyon, but it's a sub minute stage with a 2 minute looping song, so unless the synth intro hooks you, you wouldn't know or care about the song.

My personal favorite sonic game in terms of the soundtrack is colors. The menu music and the different themes of the levels that feel like they blend in with the aspects of the level. It was my favorite game as a child and my dad used to let me play it to comfort me when something really made me sad. When my beta Pluto died when I was in early elementary school and the game really helped me cope with it. Not to mention the final boss theme goes hard (despite the fact that the boss is so easy that the song always get cut short). I always have a special place for these songs and always rely on my favorites when the day has been particularly hard.

The music for Rusty Ruin Zone Act 1 in Sonic 3D Blast’s Saturn/PC version is quite emotional. To me, it gives off feelings of loneliness and sadness, while also a sense of exploration. It’s such a beautiful piece of music, it makes me wish Richard Jacques made some of the islands Mvt.s in Sonic Frontiers.

The one song that makes me FEEL is Sonic Advance 3’s credits theme, I remember completing the game for the first time as a kid and now whenever I listen to it, I always tear up or just full on cry. Hearing it makes me wish I could stay a kid forever and not deal with any of the shit I have to bother with now, back to a time when my dad was alive and could spend more time with him. I just turned 20 recently and I don’t really feel anything. But to be fair I’ve felt dead inside for a few years now but I’m happy that Sonic is a constant in my life that I can always go back to feel like a kid again.

A lot of the tracks in the Saturn games really stick out to me. I don't know what it is, but they have such a unique and melancholic sound to them. Everyone talks about the tracks in Sonic R, for good reason, but here's a couple more obscure ones which really stand out to me: - Credits, Sonic Jam - This one is weird to me. I think it's supposed to be kind of upbeat, but it has a real sense of longing to me. Sonic Jam is the last Classic Sonic game, and the music really gives off that "Ode to Classic Sonic" feeling even if it's probably not intentional. Much like the Mega Collection music, it gives you a feeling that those times are gone and not coming back, but that your fond memories will still be there. -Rusty Ruins Act 1, Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn) - This track is pure melancholy. There's something so soothing, yet kind of sad about it, and it has such a uniquely late 90's sound to it that you just don't hear anymore. Everytime I hear this track, I imagine myself listening to it in the rain, with the water dripping down my face, with distant thunder far away. It also blew my mind when I found out this track absolutely samples 'Sadeness' by Engima, which is another very melancholic song.

Though I do agree that most of the cyberspace levels in Frontiers all start to blend together, I feel like that shouldn't discredit the rest of Ohtani's amazing work on this game. If you listen to all 7 movements from Kronos, Ouranos, and especially Chaos island, it's clear that Ohtani still knows how to make mysterious, almost depressing-sounding music that matches the vibe you get from running across these empty islands.

i think splashdash is focusing too much on whats pretty much just a collection of glorified special stages with recycled level design and repetitive theming. the actual main part of the game, which are the islands, all have amazing music that fits perfectly with the overall mood of the game and the places they play on, which just goes to show that ohtani hasnt lost his touch at all

@@autumn_leaves1011 I think that's def something that was odd. That Mar-I mean-splashdash focused on the cyberspace levels to get his point across yet seem to disregard the movements from the open zones. Kinda just makes the video a bit off that he didn't even mention them. Hell, even in his review of Frontiers he only focused on the boss/cyberspace tracks. Does he just not have anything to say about the open zone music?

I may be a little biased due to the Sonic 2 mobile port being my introduction to Sonic. However, I'd say the ending music as Tails saves Sonic from falling to his death (better in the bad ending) deserved a mention as it's both triumphant and sad creating an iconic moment in the franchise

It doesn’t make me cry, but the bad ending music from Sonic 2 on the Master System marks the first time I’ve ever really listened to a song and felt like I was exactly where it wanted me to be. There’s just a sparse feel to the whole thing, especially when the echoey 8-bit soundwaves start coming through about ten seconds in. It’s strange, because for such a sad song, it has a rather quick beat to it. In a way, I think that only goes to accentuate how much your mind would race in a similar situation, with the higher chords accentuating the emotions that you just can’t stifle. All you can do is try to find peace in knowing where you are. Even while lying in bed, it makes me feel as if I’m sitting on a hill in the dead of night, the cosmos shining down and comforting me as I contemplate my choices, the end of the song marking the moment’s end before I drift off to sleep. For it being an 8-bit chiptune, it’s really quite a wonderful composition. Just wish it could have been given to a better game.

The history theme is great but I think the credits theme in Mega Collection Plus is also a really good track. It has that same melancholic feel to it but has a more outwardly upbeat tune and listening to it always makes me think of better days gone by with a hope that there is still something good to look forward to if you keep going. I honestly don't know why they put so much into music for a compilation piece but it's one thing i'm forever grateful for.
