Anytime it spins over fast but uneven speeds means it has no compression in one or more cylinders. It means some valves are busted or stuck open so the engine spins freely on some, but still has come compression on others that didn't get damaged. It's also more common on some cars than others to have timing chain or belt failures, so a knowledgeable mechanic will go into it suspecting that and be on the lookout for it. That says a lot about the other mobile mechanics, they should have known that right away. If you work on cars for a living, you should know!

its easy to tell if an engine had jumped time by the uneven sound of it spinning over. cylinders aren't getting proper compression since the valves are partially open when they shouldn't be. and with all nissan engines produced since around 2002 are interference engines, that one is a write off. best to replace the whole thing with a new long block or find a good one at a Pull-A-Part and go through it to make sure its freshened up with new seals, gaskets, hoses etc and a compression test

Or that it could just be flooeded - can also happen with nissans / infinities with hydraulic lifters - the lifters lose their pressure especially if they have been sitting a long time, and with trying to crank it still injects fuel = washed down cylinder walls. Foot to the floor (clear flood mode) and crank and sooner or later if it is that you will hear the compreesion start to come back as the walls are coated with oil for the rings to seal properly. Have expeienced this a few times when i was a mechanic years ago.

How does a "mechanic" miss that? I'm just a guy who enjoys working on cars and could instantly tell it didn't have compression on at least half the cylinders. A couple years ago was working on a 2004 TSX (bought from a buy here pay here lemon lot and had over 300K) for a friend of my wife's that just shut off on the hwy and sounded exactly the same when I turned it over. The tensioner failed and she (a single mom who lived in a run down camper) didn't have any money to fix it. I told her it was a long shot but I could replace the chain, tensioner, and guides, try do a compression test and hope for the best. After replacing the timing components the compression was fine and the car started and ran with no noise or knock counts on the scan tool. She's still driving it to this day. Sometimes miracles do happen.

@@Bad1flip I know, that's why I said sometimes miracles do happen as I fully expected every valve in the head to be smashed. In the end the chain was still on it and it only skipped just enough teeth to shut off but not enough to smash the valves. Compression was between 140-150 across the board after I put the new chain set on it. IMO that's low for this motor as I was expecting at least 180+psi. But after looking at the manual its technically "fine" by the book. So there is a possibility that the valves did ever so slightly kiss the pistons because compression was way lower than I expected but that could also just be because its got 300K on it.

I've been working on cars since I was 15, and I'm a lot older than that now...not as a "professional", and I'm deaf in one ear, and over a KZitem video I could tell it was a timing issue. Didn't hear what the mileage was, but that could be a good indicator that it could be a timing issue if the chain hasn't been serviced. I hope she gets her money back from the other mechanics. It would be nice to know whether the engine was repairable... Thank you for being an honest and thoughtful mechanic! My ex wife had someone throw parts at my daughter's car, that I usually fix. Of course, just like this car, they threw spark plugs and coil packs...and I knew the issue with neither of those, and in fact I called them, discussed the issue and told them that I was pretty sure that wasn't the issue. And it wasn't. It was a sensor connector that I fixed when I got back and could take a look at the car. Cost nothing and took 7 minutes...and some contact cleaner. Good thing my ex paid for that...
@SolluxDivide

Often times, especially with older cars "repairable" is a strong word. It can mean two things 1) can the car be repaired with a cost that does not exceed the vehicles value(practical value considering all factors such as age, mileage, etc) 2) can it be repaired at all, with unlimited budget? 2 is almost always a yes. Unless the frame is destroyed, you can replace most everything else. Ship of theseis style. #1 though is realistically what most people need and that's what he provided. The customer immediately understood too "so a new car" because repairing this old/high mileage vehicle just isn't worth it, because who knows if the Transmission fails next? Or some other expensive thing.

So the total price was around 121€ about 129$ Have not hadd eny issues since, 5years ago now. The issue was that water hadd made it's way into the holes where the sparkplugs sits, and when the engine was hot, the water evaporated up to the Rail ignition coil and 2 of the sparkplug caps hadd began to rust causing missfire on all 4 cylinders. I read that almoust all cars that has this same "Rail ignition coils system" eventually get same problems.

I called a mobile mechanic once, I was a mechanic and still play around I have my a home shop full of tools and equipment. I just needed an extra hand as I had multiple vehicles down. 75 bucks an hour. He showed up with a brand new 110pc harbor freight tool kit and a claw hammer lol no bs I have pics. He smoked in my work trucks which I don't allow. I told him to run a compression test he said he didn't have the tools for that so I let him use one of mine. Never pulled the fuel pump relay or anything. After the hour he said alright gotta go. He made it clear he's just trying to hit a couple 75 dollar jobs and be done he wasn't here to actually put work in.

that's extremely easy to diagnose, in seconds. as a mechanic, that one is far from the saddest story I've heard

The whole "you are paying for years of my experience not hours of my time" argument goes out the window when mechanics throw parts around. Good on you dude for helping this lady.

Did mobile for 5 years in the bay area. saddest call ever: handicapped couple with a dodge mini truck. No start. Previous hacks replaced fuel pump, starter, ign switch and battery. $800. No change. I replaced the FOB battery. $3. Fired right up. I didn't even ask them for money, I felt so bad for these people who were both in wheelchairs. I got paid in lasagna.

So much respect dude! Trying to not be a fly by night fuck over here in the plumbing industry and I feel like I could learn a lot from you!

This is the difference between a mechanic and the "techs" we have now. Dying breed

That's sad... This kinda thing happens way too often and people wonder why so many junk cars are around stinking up thier neighborhoods, rattling and stalling everywhere. Well, alot of it is just bad maintenance, but some, are because they've been wiped clean of any money to fix it because of this type of situation.

This guy is 1000% right because I just got a 1999 Lexus es300 two years ago with 270.0000 miles on it I went to Walmart my car just cut off the next day had it towed to my friend shop and it was the timing belt broke.. so he's right 👍

But unlike her car yours should be non interference, so you should’ve been in the clear as far as engine damage.

Thank you for being a great mechanic .there are a whole lot of shysters out there just looking for a quick dollar and they won’t be around long just sorry for this lady I’ve seen this happen to good people too

This is why basic knowledge how a car works is important.

The look of hope on her face when he says "awe yup" and calls her over after having taken the timing cover off was just heartbreaking. You hate seeing honest people done dirty, and she is probably such a good soul she has trouble hating the people that took advantage of her.

End of the video was perfect. Shame on all the mechanics who worked on it prior. You EASILY diagnosed it. I love that you ALWAYS do your OWN diagnosis no matter what. That shows you are a real mechanic and trust your skills.

I have a peace of fickle matter on four wheels and been in mechanic shops every other months for 3 years now, by any means im not mechanic but the second you start that engine I figure out its timing issue, I understand that lady's frustration some of these "mechanics" are like road bumps in your lives
