Ammon Wrigley (1861-1946) is inevitably most well known for his writings but few people recognise the fact that he was a self taught artist with his pen and ink sketches illustrating his books. The illustrations were in many cases very accomplished pieces of art. It is interesting that these illustrations have provided with in many cases a unique record of many buildings that have long gone. His other interests were of an antiquarian and archaeological nature. In 1897 he was involved in excavations at Castleshaw Roman Camp. He collected numerous flints of the moors in his travels.
