There are new stories to explore and new histories to uncover as LPB expands its online digital-first series Safe Haven: Louisiana’s Green Book with two all new episodes. This popular series explores the Louisiana businesses and places found in the famous Green Book, a guide that made travel possible for African-Americans during the Jim Crow era.
The series explores the stories behind historically significant locations across the state, including some lesser known entries such as the Giron Tourist Home in Opelousas and Jake’s Café in Bastrop.
The two new additions to the series dive into the histories of the Hotel Lincoln in Baton Rouge and the V8 Cab Line in New Orleans.
Hotel Lincoln | Safe Haven: Louisiana’s Green Book
Jackie Wilson and The Clovers are just two of the greats from the golden era of soul that stayed at Hotel Lincoln in Baton Rouge. Built in the 1950's, Hotel Lincoln was one of two African-American owned and operated hotels in Baton Rouge. But it was much more than just a pitstop between busy travel days. Host Kara St. Cyr visits with Louis Hall, who shares the stories behind the history.
V8 Cab Line | Safe Haven: Louisiana’s Green Book
The Green Book was a vital travel resource during the Jim Crow era, but what about African-Americans who didn’t have a car? Hotels, restaurants, and taverns dominated the Green Book throughout its publication, but it also offered black travelers everyday services that may have been unavailable to them otherwise. Taxi businesses were one such service. In New Orleans during the 50s and 60s, four black owned taxi companies were established to bring African-Americans through both white and black neighborhoods safely. Host Kara St. Cyr visits with Monroe Coleman who shares the stories behind the history.
Thanks to ExxonMobil Baton Rouge for underwriting the series.
