Most of those complaining about _under-gassed_ ARs have brand new rifles most likely. They also probably didn't fire _at least_ (5) 30 rd magazines with *FULL power* 5.56 NATO Ammo with heavy *lube* between magazines! Trust me, this works to smooth out everything and "marry" the parts properly (with LOTS of lube! no pun). Did I mention how important it is to over lube ONLY during the break-in period (1 range trip) and between EVERY magazine? An old war vet saw me struggling with FTF/FTE on my brand new BCM. He said "is that new? If so, where's your bottle of oil?" *Me:* _It had oil on it when I bought it!_ *OG:* _Are you simple or something?_ 😂😢

I watched your excellent tutorial months ago. Last week was at the range and my very reliable Ruger AR failed to lock open after a last round so I put a single round in a mag and fired it, locked open as it should. A few mags later same thing happened. Wasn't too concerned and went home. As a routine I clean my guns after every outing. While cleaning the Ruger I noticed one of the gas rings defective and figured out the problem. I only bring this up to mention that faulty gas ring(s) can cause an intermittent (undergassed) cycling problem.

Lot's of good info. You went deeper than what the Army taught me, though you probably know this if you're an Armorer in the Army. I've built 2 AR's that failed to feed...no I didn't try the one bullet test, just that they didn't feed the next round but did extract the fired casing...One was a 16 inch with midlength gas system, and the other was an 18 inch with midlength gas system. I first built the 16 inch and had it happen from the outset. I figured the problem was dwell time, the gasses were in the barrel too long before the gas block and too short to the bullet exiting to provide sufficient gas to fully cycle the bolt carrier group. However, midlength carbine systems are a thing. I did some research on fails to feed and one of the suggestions was to try using a chrome silicon carbine buffer spring so I bought one and after installing it, the rifle was 100%. It ran perfectly. The chrome silicon spring also eliminates the "sprong" sound next to your ear when the rifle cycles and they have an extended life cycle. Supposedly the standard buffer spring should be replaced around the 12,000 round point, but a chrome silicon spring lasts upwards of 650,000 to 700,000 rounds, far longer than I'll ever run my guns...my grand-kids should still be shooting them and be well within the life expectancy of them, short of an extended civil war or invasion by other countries. After that, I decided to build another rifle, the 18 inch, but what I decided to do was build a new lower for the 16 inch upper, and that rifle I gave to my wife, and a new upper for the original lower, the 18 inch, and that was mine. The 16 inch rebuild ran flawlessly, I did move the buffer assembly with the chrome silicon spring onto her rifle and tested it...worked 100%, however, I figured the additional 2 inches in the barrel would fix the issue and just put a regular buffer spring in the rifle....nope, it also failed to chamber the next round. Another chrome silicon buffer spring fixed that rifle, and it's ran 100%. So that's my experience, weather that was the issue both rifles had or not, it did fix the problem for both rifles. I've built a few more since and the rest have been 100% as built, and I've been using standard springs on all of them...chrome silicon buffer springs are a bit more expensive than standard springs after all, and I don't mind adding them, but they all have worked as is. My AR10 build, however, did have an issue, that being it failed to extract a round. The round was stuck in the barrel and the extractor couldn't remove the round. I ended up using the cleaning rod to knock it out, which it did remove easily. The rim on the round was damaged, probably because I hand cycled the rifle several times to try to remove the casing. I didn't get a chance to examine the bore of the barrel for any problems, and the extractor on the bolt for any problems. That's the next check I'll do on that rifle. That was the first round, and the bore could have had some gunk on it, or the extractor may have been damaged from the factory...silly me didn't look at those issues during assembly. Live and learn. That's the next check I'll be doing on it. Anyway, again good video, lot's of good info. Thank you.

I only had this failure once on a build. It was a 10.5" SOCOM profile barrel with a .086 gas port using an A5 buffer system and a Sprinco Green rifle spring. So buffer and spring were good to go. It should have run well using an A5-H3, but I was getting failures to lock back and it was riding over the rounds in the mag causing failures to feed. I went down through the A5 buffers from H2 to H1 to H0 and got similar results. The gas block came from the factory with the gas tube installed so I didn't notice the sloppy tolerances. After 2 mags of this failure I pulled the handguards and saw carbon almost 1.5" down the tube from the gas block. Huge leakage there. Pulled gas block and it was lined up perfectly. Punched out the gas tube roll pin and the tube fell out. Tried same gas tube in another gas block and it needed a little tap from the gunsmith hammer to seat. Reassembled and it ran like a sewing machine. I mention this story because it was the one interface that you did not mention. You should always check the seal where the gas tube goes into the gas block. It likely would have sealed enough over time as it started to cycle correctly in mag two, but still would not lock back. Great video as usual.

My Aero Precision upper came with a 10” 1:7 twist pistol length gas system, Ballistic Advantage barrel. The gas port was drilled from the factory to a spec of .0935”. I don’t fire suppressed, and it would fire supersonic rounds without a problem. Subsonic 220g rounds would not cycle nor create enough back pressure to strip another round from the magazine. It also wouldn’t lock the BCG back on a 1 round magazine test. I tried a SpringCo yellow reduced power spring with some success. Only a few failure to feed issues from a 30 round magazine. I decided that wasn’t good enough, and after doing some research decided to drill the gas port to .0960” (#41 carbide drill bit).this resolved my failure to feed issues. I added a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block, and within 5 rounds of making adjustments, was cycling perfectly and ejecting the casings at 3:00. I would suggest this as a last resort. You can go with lighter springs and a lighter BCG, however you will wear out your components faster by putting a bandaid on the real problem of being under gassed.
@G2niverse
2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you figured it out...but I agree...drilling is always the last resort. Sometimes you need to change you're entire setup for suppressed shooting with subsonic ammo...this would include a lighter buffer and reduced powered spring. But to your point if you want a rifle that can seamlessly go from subsonice suppressed to unsuppressed, yeah, youll need to address the main issue.

A bore sight ran up threw the barrel to look at the gas port and gas block is mandatory. Your barrels gas port may be to small. Set your gas port to a bigger gas port hole. And if your using a AGB and are still under gassed simply drill your gas port a bit larger and then you can adjust to your needs. 300blk and 300Hamr is a good example because of the large range of bullet loads and weight. No reason to beat the hell out of your gas system when switching from light to heavy loads.Simply tone it down with the adjustable gas block. Also AGB's are great if you run suppressed one day and take it off the next day so you have the ability to lower the pressure or increase for the non suppressed days.

If the gas block is not clocked, the gas tube in the gas block seal is good, the gas tube button is in spec using a gas tube gauge and the tube itself is not cracked, the gas key bore is in spec-.180 to .182, the gas key is not loose or leaking gas, the bolt carrier bolt tail bore and gas ring bore is in spec, the bolt tail O.D. is not under sized, the gas rings are good, the buffer is the correct weight, the chamber and throat check out with a function gauge, the head space checks out good using a 1.4646 5.56 go gauge, not a 1.4636 223 commercial go gauge in a marked 5.56 chamber, the ammunition is good, then the gas port may be under sized and needs to be opened..Adjustable gas blocks and adj bolt carriers will leak more gas than mill spec which can cause cycling issues. could be a magazine feeding issue, an overgassed ejection issue, a feed ramp compatibility issue. Go to the playlist and watch all of the videos. It may not be undergassed at all. kzitem.info/door/PLm7HNVpMrvhKNcVpB0JC6m5sjAf70hMu0

Thanks for video, took my build to range today first time. Was getting FTE. The manual ejection of spent casing works. So I believe my issue my gas block not properly align. BCG is the same PSA in your video.

Allot of good information but you forgot one of the most important. That is the gas port itself. Subsonic 300BO suppressed if problems I drill the port to .090

Hello g2 hope your having a great day .i have a problem with my ar pistol. Its a aero precision x15 . The firearm does fire a couple of rounds , then it fails to extract the fired bullet in the chamber, it slides the next round but it jams because the other bullet is still in the chamber. But if you remove the mag and it extracts the bullet that was stuck and fires again a couple of bullets and it fails to extract again. If you can help me identify the problem. Thank you and marry christmas/ new years!🎉

I'm dealing with this as we speak. I've been through every option you mentioned already, no answer. 3 types of ammo....... everything short of removing weights from the buffer itself. I've even swapped bcg and buffer setup from my perfect running carbine to no resolve. Having to fold and let the guys that built it give it a look.

It’s possible it’s the barrel port. I have a ballistic advantage barrel which I’m told is most likely too small of a hole.

If you're really undergassed another option would be to install a new barrel with a pistol length gas system rather then a carbine length gas system. This will give you much more gas. Especially helpful if you're running subsonic 300 blackout ammo out of a 16 inch barrel.
@hairydogstail

@@Theyoufeelme No, do not do this lol. If the gas block is not clocked, the gas tube in the gas block seal is good, the gas key is in spec-.180 to .182, the gas key is not loose, the bolt carrier bolt tail bore and gas ring bore is good, the gas rings are good, the buffer is the correct weight, the chamber and throat check out good with a function gauge, the head space checks out good then the gas port may be under sized and needs to be opened..

@@G2niverseThat’s good to know actually as I finished an A1 clone build. It short strokes and ejects almost straight back, about 5 o’clock actually. I only have less than 70 rounds through it so I’ll keep at it.

I have it where mine is not feeding the next round. Took the gas block off and noticed a very noticeable white ring around the gas block hole on the barrel. I'm figuring I'm losing gas right there.
@1unkn0wn

Gas escapes there until the gun is broken in and the gas block gets carbon locked to the barrel. It's normal to loose some gas there on a new gun/build.
