As soon as a child can sit independently and is beginning to move in and out of crawling position, I like to begin showing them how to get from the couch safely. So after reading a book, rather than lifting them off the couch and setting them on the floor, I roll them to their belly with their face pointing to the back of the couch and their feet towards the floor, and slide them to their feet and then into sitting. Learning this skill may help them learn to do steps. Well installed gates are essential to keep a baby from falling down stairs but when a child is beginning to show an interest in steps or when visiting someone with a carpeted, short staircase ( or even the one step between a kitchen and living room), it can be a good idea to show a child a safe way to go up and down the steps. One of the safest ways to introduce steps to a baby is to show them to turn around and slide down backwards. At this point we do not know how best the child learns so giving them a verbal and tactile cue sets them up for success in understanding and in learning. I like to use the same verbal command ( for example: turn around and slide down backwards) each time as I turn the child around at the top of the steps, and I use my hands to gently show them how to do this. I stand behind the child and walk down with them step by step, keeping my hands on them at all times, slowly helping them to slide down. And then I will guide them up the steps, giving them the help they need to safely get back up. I encourage them to get to the top before they transition into sitting so that they learn that the steps are not a safe place to play. Safety and preventing a fall are essential and the most important elements of this activity.
