Another great idea! I have a vent for a generator in my garage door the previous resident used. I could use your vent idea with an extension hose run from my workbench; The fans would push it right outside. Had been just using a small USB fan directly on the the work, but would much rather draw it away and out.

Why not invert the flow and have the hose as the intake, that way you can more easily position the hose near where you are working, and the fumes will be drawn along the hose to the box? This is how many professional soldering fume extractors work. Along with the filter. However, I must say the pack away design is VERY clever.

This looks useful for airbrush fumes as well. Hopefully some sort of filter in front of the fans to catch the particulate wouldn't damper the airflow to the point where it loses too much suction.

I have a squirrel cage fan from an over the oven microwave and it pushes a LOT of air. I'm planning on building my fume extractor using charcoal filter, hepa filter, a decent size Igloo type plastic cooler and some tubing that will hold shape. Add an computer type power plug and a Hi/Low switch with indicator. Maybe I am over complicating it similar to comments below but I want a nice one and done solution. I have pet birds and I shouldn't be soldering without an extractor.

I have found the side panels do more harm than good, why? because the reduce the airflow speed the farther you get away from the fan. We have $230 fume extractors at work and they suck , i use a simple PC PSU top case with its fan connected to a variable power supply and most times run it at 6 to 8 volts, it can suck the flux smoke from ~15 inches away. There the $230 units you need to be 5 inches away and some of the boards i work on are much larger than that. To bad YT does not allow picture attachments.
