The 800 is unique as it is the highest speed race run without lanes. It’s sad that this happened but that’s the risk you take by being in the middle of the pack. I sympathize with Sage’s reaction as she didn’t make the mistake but paid the same price.

It is different. My son ran the 800 and I hated watching the starts, particularly when they weren't staggered. At least one racer fell almost every single race. The pace is so fast that even if the runner gets up, there is almost no way to catch the pack and still have legs at the end. I cleaned up a ton of spike injuries on my son's legs over the years.

To all the haqaters out there, I don’t see any medals for the USA women in the 800M race unless they all run lifetime bests which they already have. Mu is stll recovering from injuries and mental counseling. She was running in order to try to save something for the final lap by running in the pack which I thought was a mistake because of her long legs. She was tripped on both sides as I saw the race. I would have tried to stay to the outside instead of being in the middle of the pack, but that is from my years of experience with track as a sprinter/quarter miler and relay runner.

There was nothing she could have done and these things happen. They are both long legged women with long strides in a tight space. Runners get clipped in tight spaces and it is only a matter of when the clip happens during your stride, and she got clipped where she lost her balance that led to a fall. Hell, it could happen if she got in the front because these women are using long strides close to one another trying to maintain their pace. There is no need to overthink this or place blame. Falls happen in a tight pack. I do think the USA needs to rethink and slightly modify the process to get on the Olympic Team. If you are a defending World Champion or Olympic Champion, you should get an automatic place on the team. Keely Hodgkinson from Great Britain will most likely win the gold in Paris now for the 800m, but I believe she would like to win that medal by beating her rival Athing Mu on the track in lieu of Athing not being in the race due to a fall. In the pole vault, KC Lightfoot didn't make the jump to finish in the top 3 even though he is ranked 6th in the world. Is it any wonder why Armand Duplantis pole vaults for Sweden even though he is American as American can be.

This whole US Trials system needs to be modified so that athletes that fall in races are allowed to do a time trial afterwards and if they can either, 1) beat the best time at the trials or 2) get one of the 3 best times in the world for the season (after all the countries have completed their national Olympic trials), then they should be allowed on the team and knock out the slowest US Olympic team qualifier from the trials.

@@EricS-uf9mvplus, she got third in the Diamond league final (which is a lot of money, and a coveted podium in track and field). I absolutely think she could have made it this year. Unlike a lot of our m/w 800m meter runners recently, she is very consistent in her times and performances. I don’t know how it would work, but I do wish there was some sort of appeal process for instances like this. Falls and runner interference can be appealed in heats and semis at international competition, but it is just accepted in finals. Idk, in ice skating and gymnastics, usually first and second are automatic qualifiers, but third can be changed by the committee. Maybe there could be a time trial type thing for athletes impeded in races 800 and above, to limit the catastrophic impact of a single runners poor judgement on world leading athletes. It’s kind of how I feel about the “only 8 out of the 12 field event finalists” get 6 jumps. If you are going to limit the athletes to three jumps before whittling it down, why not just make the final only 8 athletes. We often leave behind medal contenders because they had a couple fouls while getting warmed up, and weren’t allowed to complete their final three jumps/throws in the final.
