Thank you so much for this video. When I was 12 years old I was apart of the 4-H program due to my foster parents wishes, and I had raised 2 lambs, and I betrayed them. On the day that they got onto the trucks to go to the slaughterhouse I cried and cried and knew I had done something terribly wrong. And I did not ever do it again. This is still my biggest regret in my life, and I still think about them every day. I became vegan soon after I moved out at 18 and I have not looked back since. It is true that the parents and 4-H leaders hide the truth from the children. Never once was the words said, "Your animals will turn into food" or "Your animals will go to the slaughterhouse." They literally told us that we would "just take care of the animals and sell them." Of course no kid wanted their animals to be gone, but kids don't realize what's happening until the time comes when they take the animals away. These are truly disgusting groups, and I hope that all the other 4-H kids are able to see the connection like I did. Rest in peace Scruffy and Jace (those were the lambs' names).

I believe that we will look back on the meat industry in much the same way as slavery and other unethical moments in humanities past. We´re seeing that Dolphins are now called non human persons, and I believe that also farm animals will be treated like cats and dogs in the future. We dont eat cats and dogs, but we live with them, I think it because of advocacy organizations like yours that this is getting more and more accepted into mainstream culture. We´re actually becoming more and more ethical as a society overall, so the future can look very positive. I salute you for your compassionate work with these animals!

You have some messed up beliefs, you think we're just gonna turn the millions of farm animals loose or keep them as pets. I think we can all see the problem with having a herd of cows wonder onto the interstate,

It's common sense to not consider Dolphins as humans because they're not and never will be. And if you think this is even relative to slavery then you're a genuine idiot.

I live on a beef cattle farm, and this is the exact reason why I dont join any of these organizations in school. Im only 16 so I dont have alot of control of what happens here on the farm, but it breaks my heart because we butchure here at home too. I hate it because I love all our animals here and I get so attatched.

This is so upsetting. "Learning about the beef industry"? I'm sure they aren't learning how animal agriculture is the most unsustainable means of food and how it's the world's top polluter. This 4H "club" is sick. How could you let a child get attached to an animal just to have it killed shortly after in such a brutal manner? You do not have to kill an innocent life to teach children to be "stronger". Jay is completely right when he says it is devastating that they're teaching the children not to feel. Sigh.

Wonderful! Glad their safe! Its weird to think that kids younger than me are finding this out but also loosing there best friend. I found out this year the truth about farm animals and I felt like I wasn't ready to see it. Its sad to see whats happening. I've always always always been an animal lover and to see such terrible things break me. Im gonna start a rescue when I'm older. Your family has inspired me. I read your book and now I know that some of the feelings i have after different situations is ok because I know I'm not alone. Thank you Ellie:)

I never did and still don't understand how these kids can give these animals up. I couldn't have at that age. I remember going to the county fair and looking at those poor animals and I knew what was going to happen to them, even at a young age.

I agree, my kids were in 4H, my daughter did not see the ugly side as she chose a rabbit breeding project instead of a meat project . We as parents dodged the bullet on that one. Although the girls were exposed to a family in our club that chose meat projects, they also saw the kinds of people they were as they were very poor and lived in a falling down house. When we had meetings at their place the children were warned not to use the bathroom as the floor was gone and you could fall through to the basement. It was a sort of compromise thinking for us as they saw that those rabbits brought food to their table , as compared to our cuddly cute bunnies we raised, loved and sold for pets at the end of it all.

You're drinking the Kool-Aid, aren't you, kids? That's what your parents told you and that what your mentors told you and "it makes you stronger" to kill an animal after you've raised it with love. Wrong! Would you do that to your dog or cat? No!

I'm really sad that the young girl says that sending them to slaughter makes you stronger and prepares you for real life tragedies. She was most likely taught that by someone and it's just not realistic. Humans try to play the god complex and it's very sad. I'm sad people are raising their kids that way.

So great that they were saved but what about all the others. What a betrayal for these animals. They are loved and treated like one of the family and then they are murdered. Would these people do that to their dogs or cats? No. So what is the difference?

I live in Texas.. I've been here for about 10 yrs.. Don't get me wrong I love it here and the people are friendly.. But Rodeo and 4 H are a big deal here. They have a livestock and Rodeo show every year and it's a big deal rides and such.. Being a animal loving Vegan.. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.. I couldn't fathom 4 H raising a animal only to sale itfor meat.. I'm very greatful my parents understood my animal loving ways from a early childhood.. My parents supported my not wanting to dirsect a fetal pig and have stood by my sometimes Strange to them animal rights and activism ways.. I know I could never be part of these.. I must be heart wrenching to love something and then let be sent off to be killed.. It's big and Texas and they feel very different then I do the tell me I'm stupid and radical.. But I sleep well at night I'm not part of the problem .

You're literally copy and pasting this exact thing on almost every comment. Get a life. And the comment "would have been sent to slaughter anyway" is so disgusting. You have no empathy or compassion for these animals> I wouldn't be surprised if you're racist or homophobic. Typically ignorant.

I saved two newzealand rabbits, one is with a little girl, the rabbits name is opal. And I also have Venus, he is my baby boy and People are telling me I would get alot of money out of him. My rabbit is better than 20 some dollars, my baby that I took time to bond with is not food. It took me a year to show him he was okay, and that I love him.

My god these people know how to play with the feelings of animals. Dont you see they are being taught how to cheat the most beautiful feeling that is love. Love is one single feeling either for people or for animals. Am sorry these children are in a way learning how to abandon their parents in their old age. 'Thou should not kill' remember from where this line comes! In our world children should learn how to empathise. Sorry these huge animals feed only on leaves yet they are so healthy and beautiful.

I hate this, the 4-H should be ashamed of themselves. We treat children how to care and love something beyond themselves and they kill the animal. I really believe we are seeing the aftermath of this heartless tradition, humans are breeding an onslaught of children lacking any form of empathy, not only directed towards animals, but to their human counterparts. Humans are terribly cruel, we need to teach love and compassion, respect, loyalty.

'It's a great experience to learn about the beef industry" This poor child has no idea. Her indoctrination into the beef industry through 4H is more accurate and a little more "sanitised". These young people should experience the full process from conception to your grocery store. Then tell me if 'It's a great experience to learn about the beef industry"

I'm part of something similar to 4H. But I know exactly what happens at the slaughterhouse. No, I am not innocent. No, I am not a monster. Yes, I do value each animal's life. My show heifer is being slaughtered this year, but I don't have a say in it. I believe that every animal deserves a great life, from point of conception to point of slaughter. It's the way life works apparently. Also, I'm working for a career in the beef industry. I dream of breeding, raising, showing beef cattle. And I can already see the replies I'm going to get. Probably full of hate and vegan preachers. Even so, I have nothing against that. If you are a vegan, go for your life. It's your opinion and you are entitled to it, as am I.

Those are not beef calves, they're veal calves. Watch your information please, two totally different things. Your making it sound like 1200 pound steer only live for three months. They don't. Steer are around 18 months old by the end of the project. I raise livestock. Lambs, steer, rabbits, and poultry. I'm also a vegetarian. Unlike MANY people will ever chose to be. My goal in life is to make what I cannot change and what no one will EVER change better. People will ALWAYS eat other animals. And you know what? That sucks. But that calf that I went out a payed $1500 dollars for still would have been BRED into EXISTENCE had I not bought him. I take great pride in my animal care. My steer is living the best POSSIBLE LIFE THAT HE COULD CURRENTLY LIVE in my care. You couldn't afford him. Decrease in supply does not equal a decrease in demand. It doesn't. People will keep eating beef weather or not I raised a steer. I hate seeing things like "Oh, they don't love their animals." You're wrong. This economy and this world only gives you so much room to love. It's not my fault it is that way.
