Created for my 16MM Filmmaking class, Sail Through Marigold is a collection of footage I shot all by myself on a Bolex H-16, 16MM Camera, from the beginning to the end of the Fall Semester for my school which was then combined together to create a short film. Prior to joining this class, I had never held or used a Bolex camera before in my life which made learning this camera very difficult. On top of that, filming this alone was no exception. Although my Test Footage and first 2 Final Project Rolls were mainly overexposed which couldn't be used or added to the final product, I was able to make up for that lost footage with my 3rd and 4th Final Project Rolls. The film portrays isolation or separation within this given space I created to show the passage of time after a loved one passes away. Through the usage of layering, we dive into a traumatic/sad story of understanding the human emotions of coping with loss as a way to continue moving on with our lives. Experiences like these take a heavy toll on us mentally and make us feel as if we're now all alone in this larger than life world we are set in. Although it may not exactly be implied as to who passed away in this film, the film acts as a reminder to anyone out there who has lost someone very important to them in their life that they will always be with you deep down in your heart or the Earth you walk on. Even though they are no longer there to help you get back up on your feet, it's the memories and connections we make with these individuals that helps motivate us to continue living our lives to the fullest and be able to push through this tough time like they would've wanted us too.
Link to the Fine Cut I made for my 16MM class. Credit it's the same short film I posted onto the channel but there's one shot I moved towards the end of the film which doesn't change much in general: • Final Project Fine Cut...
