Great teacher you can tell he learnt in the real world, all those little incidental tips.

this is very valuable and insightful video lesson on fuel bleeding. I am ready to do my engine now- watch the whole video because if not you will miss valuable tidbits

Often neglected is the fact that the bleed lever on the side of the pump runs on the cam...as a result if it's sitting on a high lobe you can't bleed it. The first part of the lever stroke is just free play, the pump action is in the bottom 20% of the stroke and is considerably heavier. If you are sitting on a high lobe you will not be about to bleed the system...roll the engine until you gain that heavier stroke.

A very important step is after bleeding the secondary filter, you need to bleed at the fuel injection pump inlet port. The Yanmar manual somehow missed this step too, but quite critical if the secondary filter was serviced. On some engines this bleeder plug is hard to access with a 10mm box wrench. I gave a fairly long wrench a 90 deg bend close to the box end by heating it to make this task far easier. If you don’t bleed here, the engine can suck in an air bubble from the secondary filter’s exit line after a short run.

Ive never ben able to use the engine driven pump to get fuel up to the filter.... I usually fill the filter with fuel.... I have a brand new pump installed and it never gets hard... even when completely bled.

On my boat I cant get to those injector nuts....Its impossible for me to get to the top of the engine....I normally crack the injector nut itself.

I've also never heard of someone finger tightening their secondary fuel filter. It is gently tapped closed with a hammer and a large flat screwdriver tip.

The toghtness of the collar is not what seals the cup. Its the oring that seals it. Finger tight is perfectly fine. If a wrench was to be used there would be flats for a wrench....

You should compress the O-ring by additional partial turn to be sure of no leaks. Yanmar sells a spanner wrench to grab those notches. I made my own. This is unlike a large dia. oil filter which can be torqued 3/4 turn by hand-after contact.

If you have more videos from the Mack Boring class, please post them. I want to take a diesel engine class, but I live in OK. They only offer semester long courses.... Thank you!

Hi! I wish I had more but alas I don’t. You might see if the United States Sail and Power Squadron offer courses near you. If not you can take some online. I took many classes with them and they are top notch. I took the engine maintenance class and here’s the link:www.usps.org/index.php/courses-another-version?id=189 Hope this is helpful.

Can someone explain why it is necessary to close the thru hull?

I wondered about this myself. There has to be some connection, but I cant imagine how it affects the fuel line. Does it perhaps make the engine easier to start by reducing exhaust pressure??

the teacher insinuated something like this. He said it let's it run faster.

Just found my own answer in another video. running the starter motor (for a long while) without the engine starting can fill the exhaust system with water all the way back to the engine.

This was so weird to watch. I have done many of these things before, several times. And if it wasn't a teacher saying it, I'd say he was wrong. For example, you don't need to take the bleed bolts out of the secondary fuel filter, more than one quarter. It will bleed, without a mess, once you back off by a tiny amount.

The Thomas , I think he was just was showing then the screw with the two holes. I did not know that it had two holes. Maybe he also should have said not all bleed screws are the same. Just I thought.

He told him to take it totally out so he could show them the bleed holes in the bolt you moron. You clearly did not watch the whole video. You saw him tell the guy to take the bolt out, you got triggered and went straight to the comments.
