Totally agree mate, KZitem is yet another colossal corporation fleecing ordinary people and probably paying peanuts in taxes. The world is growing very sick of the deeply sinister and constant flow of these corporations that appear as if from nowhere, and nearly always come from Silicon Valley.

Why not practice celestial navigation? That would eat up a lot of time on a long passage, and is fascinating (in my opinion).
@SailingYachtFlorence
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bobbie, We have a sextant and the book on how to use it. We have been reading up on it but were missing some information, which we now have. So we will learn! Its amazing to go back to this method of navigation and see how it used to be done. It only serves to make us more appreciative of the modern GPS navigation which is quick and easy.
@BobbieGWhiz
6 жыл бұрын
cvcoco Well I personally enjoy celestial navigation. I found it challenging to learn, but it was gratifying and taught me about celestial mechanics. I would not use the word dumb as I find it too harsh and suspect many of those folks are good and intelligent people.
6 жыл бұрын
I sailed to the Marquesas 41 years ago, when celestial navigation was the only method of offshore navigation. We were supposed to be within 10 miles of the Marquesas, and couldn't see them. They were where we expected them, but the trade wind haze completely hid them! Unlike fog, you couldn't tell that the haze was there. A few memories - 30 days at sea, from Long Beach, California. Rolling heavily in a quartering sea 12' high, in 40+ knots for days, as we departed in March. An unstayed, through deck main mast that kept working out its wedges and thunking against the deck partners, until I made a Spanish windlass to keep the wedges in place. Losing 12 miles one day, becalmed. Lots of tiny dead flying fish on deck every day, along with cups of dried salt. In the doldrums, water skeeter bugs everywhere, far at sea! Rolling, restless anchorages. Swarms of ferocious biting bugs including gnats and mosquitos, ashore. Tall, amazing, beautiful volcanic crags made of rain sculpted ash. Little mud skippers in the rocks at the shore, hopping around out of the water. An intelligent, inquisitive Marquesan who spoke excellent English learned from Yachties, but who laughed in polite disbelief when I described icebergs as floating islands made of ice. He lived an isolated life with his family, on a bay on the north side of Nuku Hiva. A skipper on another American yacht who was dead drunk 24/7, who always seemed very cranky. Having to land and launch through 3' surf to get ashore or go back to our boat. Our boat, Batwing, with a junk rig designed by Col. Blondie Hasler, commando hero of WW II. Batwing, with its hull designed by a man in his 80s, Ed Monk, N.A., of Seattle, with the hull and deck built by a fishing boat company in Port Townsend. Our old Aeries wind vane, like the one on SV Florence, above. I had thought that they had stopped making them decades ago, despite their perfect design and construction for their job. After moving on to Papeete, Tahiti, passing north of the Tuamotus, filling out the French forms that demanded to know how many coffins we had onboard, and inquiring about the health of the ships's rats. I wonder if they still ask these questions of little yachts? Mine was just 34 feet long, and less than 11 feet wide.

Fantastic video! I've always been fascinated with sailing but have yet to take the leap. Someday!! I do have a question for you, though: While taking these extended trips, do you ever listen to shortwave radio? It would provide a lot of free news and entertainment no matter where you are in the world. I run a blog called the SWLing Post which focuses on shortwave and ham radio. I receive questions every month from readers who are specifically interested in recommendations for maritime use. The cool thing about shortwave is that it works amazingly well over salt water. Even a $40 radio will pick up stations from across the planet! Again, just curious if you keep a radio on board! Keep up the great work. Just subscribed!

Hi Thomas, We do have such a radio on board which we used to use for news but it died recently. It is on the list to be looked at! To be honest sometimes it is nice to be away from the news, so much of the news is negative these days. cheers M&A

Still...you're missing out on some *amazing* music via shortwave from the Voice of Greece, Radio Romania International, All India Radio, RNZI, NHK, RHC and so many others! :) Just sayin'! Again, all the best and happy travels! Cheers, Thomas

Never go sailing. We went in a 45 ft ketch in 19 92 and are still at it. We did it for 6 years until King Neptune took us under. . . . . In the vast expanses of the Pacific. There is nothing like losing ur earthly life at sea. Swimming with the dolphins now day & night. Escorting the odd lonely yacht now & then also to just see the latest technology used these days. Fascinating not being seen on board. The catamarans are really something these days. Very interesting younger people sailing now & making a living off it. Happy sailing & fair winds. 😅😨

We're both dinghy sailors and dinghy racers from age 6, Florence is our first yacht although we had raced on other peoples yachts before. Other than dinghy qualifications we were instructor/coach, we only have a yacht master theory course. The rest we learned as we went along. We are a similar level and can both handle Florence single handed if we want to. There are several cruisers out here who learned to sail later in life and are having a great time circumnavigating, so you don't have to start as young as we did.

Guys, A nice place to stop in the Pacific is Apia, Western Samoa. you can restock all there and it won't break your budget, go the local markets and fish markets near the city centre. that's the other end (western end) of Beach Rd to Aggie Greys Hotel. The locals are great and you must go to the local villages and watch a game of cricket, played baseball style and most of the villiage plays and fields, or a game of rugby, same effect. Fair winds, Paul
