When the boys are singing 'Sailing' - that really turns the waterworks on. There is so much that I can relate to in this series, a comrade from the former Federal German Navy.

I was born a couple of years after this was made and it amazes me how much things have changed. One thing that will never change is waiting for your first baby to arrive! Must be awful to be a service wife in this situation.

I bet the people moaning about millennials in comments in these videos are the same age as the dad and that their mothers were also dealing with their problems at their age. People never change and the oldies ALWAYS complain about the youth. Every generation is the same.

People who moan about millennials for the most part don’t know what a millennial is. It was the millennial generation who served in Afghanistan and took part in the 2nd Gulf War. You’re entirely right the oldies have been moaning about the younger ones for generations and so it will continue. There was an old black and white war film I watched not long back, I forget the name of it but the opening scene was WW2 soldiers being put through combat training and they kept cutting back to two Chelsea Pensioners who’d served in the Sudan going on about how much tougher it was in their day. There are some excellent young people around, they just don’t get highlighted enough, the media hones in on all this woke crap which makes it seem the whole world is going mad.

Wilfred Graham must've been a fine skipper. From watching this documentary, it seems he was indeed serious as hell about his job, but not so much to the point he couldn't find a little time for humor. So many of the carrier captains in the US Navy of that era were tyrants. My nephew got out of the Navy a couple years ago, and he said it's almost like going to prison for a new recruit out of high school. He was on the Nimitz, and said the COs were a bunch of ballbusters....they'll crawl your ass for the least little infraction these days.

+Lex5576 It was like that when I was in during the late 90s. There were some decent skippers but a lot of them were ball busters. The ships they commanded had a reputation for being screwed up. If the skipper wasn't a prick then the XO was. Our XO was always riding out asses.

I'm of the opinion that Captain Graham was an exceptional CO and was respected by officers and rates alike. The XO was also fairly likeable and the Master At Arms was a perfect gent....you wouldn't want to screw up but knew you'd be treated fairly if you did. You can't treat your crew like crap and expect them to respect you. I think the Royal Navy and the USN are two very different animals and it's sad that some officers can't use common sense or show a little empathy now and again. I doubt you'd see an American commanding officer fannying about in a skirt for fear of being laughed at....us Brits are masters at self-deprecating humour and understand the value of humour in situations where so many men are confined for such long periods. Just my opinion!

That's the way it should be. To get respect you need to give respect. Intimidating people into respecting you doesn't get positive results. The US Navy has been influenced by the Royal Navy in so many ways, I think they should learn some lessons in leadership from the RN.
