@David Villarreal I have seen people using Chrome Books or inexpensive laptops. I even use a Raspberry Pi 4 with a Touch Screen on my LongMill (Also works on the 3018, as it is all GRBL Based). My basic rule of thumb for any computer/laptop buy is I5 (or equivalent AMD) or higher and at min 4 gigs ram. I would also try to get something made from the last 5 years, as have seen issues with people and the CH340 driver on older computers.

Thanks for this. I wanted to use the offline controller in the workshop and leave the laptop in the house for designing. Just use sd cards. This cleared up a lot of offline controller questions I had. And kept the intimidation to a minimum. Keep up the great work, and thanks again.

I have a problem when using the probe and the offline controller. After the probe touches it retracts way too much and activates the upper limit switch. How can I set the height it retracts? If I use a laptop and Candle, I don't have this problem.

There should be a 2 files on your SD card. Probe.txt & spindle/laser.txt go into the probe.txt and see if there are any settings you can adjust for that. It's been awhile and I am not close to my machine to confirm if you can set it in that file.

Interesting video. I saw that you had separate toolpaths for each bit change. How did you get it to line up perfectly? I have a file that has two toolpaths but I don't know how to change the bit when it finishes the first toolpath. If I set the probe then the file starts with the first toolpath again. I'm new to this and I must say it is frustrating.

In the GCode after the last Z Raise I put X0.00 & Y0.00 (Each on their own line) which send it back to job 0, change the bit, reset the Z Height and run the next gcode.

When you press “home” have you previously told it where home is? Because when I press home, nothing at all happens. I just finished building the machine so I’m trying to figure out how I can test it to see if it’s working?
@D.E.Hammer

So "Home" is set up in the GRBL Settings and is dependent on how $3 & $23 are set up. GRBL assumes that your Home is in the Positive direction and will move all axis, until they trigger a limit switch. Here are the two links that give a good over view of GRBL and what each $ does www.diymachining.com/downloads/GRBL_Settings_Pocket_Guide_Rev_B.pdf bitraf.no/w/images/4/4c/GRBL_software_Instructions_CNC3-3018Pro.pdf

I am using the online controller and using the paper method for setting Z. and set XYZ. I noticed on video that you spindle automatically starts and stops. What do I need to do. When I send the g-code created by Easel I use the Spindle/Laser selection on controller to turn off and on.
@D.E.Hammer

The GCODE for turning the spindle on is M03. To turn it off it is M05. So Lets say I run my spindle at 9000 RPM the GCODE would be M03S9000. I hope this helps.

I have the 4030 and it uses a different offline controller. I have to use it exclusively as the CNC will not communicate directly with my Mac running Big Sur. It is a bit cumbersome to use but I think I have mostly figured out. But I have no idea what the PWM button does, (related to laser option?) Thanks for great videos
@D.E.Hammer

PWM is Pulse Width Modulation which does relate to Laser, most likely a way to test or focus the laser. I am not able to say that with 100% accuracy as I have not really looked into the 4030 controller. Thank You for Watching & the comments.

What is the GRBL $21 setting set to 0 or 1? This Enables (1) or Disables(0) the "Hard Limits" or Limit Switches. This needs to be enabled for homing to work I can not remember off the top of my head if you need to enable $22 as well.
@AllenIsbell

Never mind, I just had to turn it off and back on and now it's homing as it should. The controller does freeze up from time to time, though. Should I replace the SD card? I'm using the original.
@D.E.Hammer

That would be the cheapest first option, but it could be the controller its self. Just remember the controller can only read a 1 gig sd card max or smaller.

@@D.E.Hammer My $21 and $22 are both enabled. Homing works only half the time. I can only get my G53 moves to work half the time, too. I understand, I have a Raspberry Pi 4 with CNCjs for my longmill, but have hooked it up to my 3018 and it works great. I see that the controller works great for some and not so great for others. So maybe they had a QC issue on a batch of them.

Could you explain what gcode you're using to get your 3018 to return to your work zero at the end of the tool path?
@D.E.Hammer
2 жыл бұрын
So towards the end of the gcode, find the last z movement, so if your retract height is 3, it should say Z3.00 after that I put X0.00 & Y0.00 (each on their own line) this sends them back to job 0.

@@D.E.Hammer I would if I knew what that was 😊. I am new to this and really struggling with the offline controller. I got it to carve one job using the sd card that came with the machine. During the next job it stopped in the middle of the carve and showed an alarm. When I restarted it it just drilled right through. @@danhealy7341 I all to well understand how it can be frustrating. So the $110 & $111 are settings saved on your board. I am assuming that you are using a GRBL board. You will need something like UGS or CNCjs to open up communication with your board. Then you can type in $$ to see all your machine settings. Here you will be able to set all of your Travel speeds, turn laser on/off, or even refine your motor steps. This link shows you what each setting is for and what it does. www.diymachining.com/downloads/GRBL_Settings_Pocket_Guide_Rev_B.pdf This video is what I used to calibrate my machine: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1mqDyZ6wcHuBZGU As for the alarm, plunging, and not turning off the spindle I would calibrate your machine and then see if you have any issues. If you do then lets look at that.
