Saint Gerasimos of Kefalonia (not to be confused with Saint Gerasimos of the Jordan who lived in the 5th century) was born in 1506 in the Peloponnese. Attracted to the monastic life, he renounced the wealth of his noble family, became a monk serving at Mount Athos, then 12 years in Jerusalem, visited Mount Sinai, Egypt and Crete, where he stayed for two years in a cave, then in Zakynthos Island, where he also lived as a hermit in a cave for about five years, after which in 1555, at the age of 50, he arrived here in Kefalonia where he lived in a cave in Lassi. In 1560 he rebuilt the old church in Omala dedicated to the "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" and established around it a nunnery, the one we are in, called by him "New Jerusalem", as a reminder of the years of service in the Holy Land. It is currently known as the Saint Gerasim Monastery. Saint Gerasim became famous for the physical and spiritual healings he performed, and especially for the power to drive away unclean spirits. He passed to God on August 15, 1579. His tomb was opened in 1581 and 1582, the body being found incorrupt, and the relics were moved to a reliquary in the old church. He was canonized in 1622. He is celebrated with great processions and pilgrimages on August 16, commemorating the day of his death, and on October 20 when he was exhumed. After the terrible earthquake of 1953, a new and lavish church dedicated to Saint Gerasimos was erected within the monastery premises, completed in 1992. As the protector of the Island of Kefalonia, Saint Gerasimos performed many miracles, both during his life and after.
The video captures the special moment of the opening of the reliquary in which the relics of St. Gerasim are located, as far as I understand it was occasioned by the arrival of a group of Romanians and due to a (some) Romanian nuns who serve at this monastery.
