On September 23, 2021, on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of the passing of Padre Pio, representatives of the Municipality of Pietrelcina, Italy, the birthplace of Padre Pio, and of the Saint Pio Foundation dedicated a public square in Pietrelcina’s Piana Romana to the “People of the United States of America” for providing the opportunity to Grazio Forgione, the father of Padre Pio, to work and to support the education of his son Francesco. This is the only monument in all of Italy that is dedicated to the People of the United States.
For that occasion, sculptor Timothy Schmalz, perhaps the greatest modern artist in the Catholic world, created the large-scale statue, titled "I Embrace You,” that was installed on the square that day. His masterpiece portrays Padre Pio embracing Jesus’ blood as it flows down to a world in need of redemption. The creation of this public space and the installation of Timothy Schmalz’ sculpture paid tribute to the historic and unique role of America in the life of Padre Pio, later to be known as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
