The chromatic strokes in the piano can evoke the roar of wild animals. Chickens and roosters : 2 pianos, clarinet, violins, viola - The imitation of cackling and cackling clarinet is present. A solid and brief chord puts an end to it. Hemiones: 2 pianos - Hemiones are wild donkeys from Asia. A fast animal, like the Presto in the score, particularly virtuosic for pianists. Turtles: Strings, piano - Of course, the speed of the hemiones is opposed here, but in a very amusing way, since this movement is built on the famous and very slowed down tune from Offenbach's quadrille from Orpheus in the Underworld, the famous "French Cancan". The Elephant : Piano and double bass - Parody of Hector Berlioz's Dance of the Sylphs (double bass), again, like the "French Cancan" against the grain, and an allusion to Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream. Kangaroos : 2 pianos - An imitative movement of the animal's jumps and stops. Aquarium : 2 pianos, flute, celesta, violins, viola, cello - Everyone has heard this movement in commercials. One cannot forget the extraordinary bubble effect. Long-eared characters: violins - This is the donkey, its braying is imitated. It is the shortest movement. The cuckoo in the woods : 2 pianos, clarinet (from the wings) - A rather poetic movement where the cuckoo clarinet reiterates its descending third. La volière : 2 pianos, flute, strings. Very graceful movement, where the theme is held almost exclusively by the flute, supported by discreet tremolos of the strings and pizzicatos. Depending on the interpretation, the tempo varies a lot. Pianists : 2 pianos, strings - A caricature where the pianist is asked not to succeed in his exercises of scales and thirds. Fossils : 2 pianos, xylophone, clarinet, strings - One can recognize his famous Danse macabre, J'ai du bon tabac, Ah vous dirais-je Maman, by Mozart, Au clair de la Lune, En partant pour la Syrie, an aria by Rosine ("una voce poco fa") from Rossini's Barber of Seville. The Swan: 2 pianos, cello. Perhaps the most famous movement of the whole piece, or at least the only one that has the honor of being played alone, it is a magnificent cello solo supported by the piano, very poetic and without any humor or caricature of any excess of lyricism proper to the strings. Finale : Tutti - The parade, synthesis of all that precedes. The animals reappear more or less briefly in the following order: the hemiones (with chords chanted by the strings), the fossils (notably by the more important use of the xylophone), the hens and roosters, the kangaroos, the donkeys and, implicitly by the tonality, the lion.
