Just occurred to me that Saint-Saens shares the same attribute as Dave's hero Dvorak - they both wrote great operas, symphonies, concertos, chamber music - and I hate to say it, but I think SS piano music is more impressive than D's. The latter may win on songs though...genuinely incredible!

2:12 - there are two other violin concerti which I have - nice works. And of course I have the Martinon symphonies. But I must admit that despite being a violinist I know none of his chamber music: on my list!

Bru Zane has just issued Saint-Saens' last opera, Dejanire, from 1911. Related to but very different from his 1898 incidental music to Gallet's play written for outdoor festival performance. The composer's treatment actually looks forward to later anti-Romantic and the anti-Wagnerian reaction in French music after WW1. Almost neoclassical. (Iole's scene at the top of Act 2 could almost have come from the pen of Faure, who greatly admired the opera.) Now there is great and there is GREAT. The capitals are reserved for Handel's treatment of the same story in his Hercules. But Saint-Saens' version deserves serious attention.

Yes, I have that release and look forward to hearing it. Dejanira's mad scene in Handel's Hercules is amazing. I made a video about it.

@@DavesClassicalGuideSaint-Saens cannily avoids comparison, assuming anybody knew the Handel, by ending the show as Herc goes up in flames.

Philippe Entremont recorded the complete piano concertos of Saint Saens at the end of the 70s with the Orchestra of the Capitol of Toulouse and Michel Plasson for Columbia Masterwork.....It was Pascal Rogé who recorded the concertos with Charles Dutoit......Philippe Entremont also recorded, again for Columbia Masterwork, Nos. 2 and 4 of Saint Saens with Ormandy at the beginning of the 60s

Your mentioning of the Saint-Saëns' violin concertos immediately brought to mind the Grumiaux recording of concerto no. 3, the Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, and the Havanaise... The violin concerto is just great, and the smaller pieces in the exalted hands of M. Grumiaux turn into glittering, precious stones framed by the purest gold - the epithome of élégance and refinement. You can choose between stereo (Fournet) and (excellent) mono (Rosenthal) - for me the latter just carries the palm.

What on earth are you talking about? I love those short pieces and have never said otherwise.

@@DavesClassicalGuide My most sincere apology... I have revised my post accordingly, and hope you won't ask me to go outside to commit sepuko! (even outside it makes such a horrible mess!) What then was the piece where you played the triangle ad nauseam in the final movement?
