Trouble with my Saito FA-62. Been flying my Hangar 9 Piper J3 Cub for a few years now with a Saito FA-62 four stroke engine. Was running great for a long time. But recently it’s been stalling when the tank gets to be about halfway full, or halfway through a flight. Well, I did a lot of searching online and checking RC Plane Forums such as RC Universe and RC Groups for some advice and I got a few nice viewer comments with some tips (thanks!).
In this mini-series, check out the play list, I replaced the fuel tank and lines, changed the glow plug, adjusted and set the valve gap, re-tuned the high and low speed needles. None of these things, although good things to check, did the trick. The engine still stalled once the tank was about half full.
So taking additional advice from some of you, I installed a felt clunk. The idea behind the felt clunk is that it will soak up fuel and act like a fuel reservoir when the tank is low and if the fuel sloshes around and exposes the clunk to air, the fuel in the felt clunk will power the engine until the clunk lands back into the fuel.
In this video I show test flights with the felt clunk and it works! I had no stalls. I did puch it a little too long on one flight and did run the fuel out of the tank and dead sticked for a landing. But that was pilot error, not fuel tank or engine failure.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques to building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do. Thanks for watching my channel. Have fun!
