Thank you so much for making this. I've been a remote freelance UI designer since I started 5 years ago. I feel like I'd be level 3 or very close to it and that kind of salary would be absolutely amazing. I'd definitely go for a full-time role if I could work at a cool place you like have!

So I had watched the previous video that you referenced in the beginning on this video a month or so before I ended up getting a job interview for a product design job. I’ve been a graphic designer for a couple years but this was my first time in product design so I’m at the entry level stage. I wanted to say your previous video gave me the insight I needed to be able to negotiate my starting salary and I got the job at that salary! Thanks so much for making these videos Charli, they’re incredibly important in empowering people like me to understand our value and self-worth when it comes to what we bring to an organization. I've been a web designer and front-end web developer for 6 years and I'm only making $41k at a small tech company in WI. I'm easily somewhere between level 3 and 4 for responsibilities, and have known I am way underpaid (along with the rest of the IT team, sadly).

I've found the best way to get a raise is to "promote" yourself. If the company won't pay your worth, leave. Leave and make yourself a senior if you have the years to back it. Logic goes that if a customer walks into a store that is over their budget, they can't afford the store's prices so they simply don't buy. The same logic should apply to companies hiring talent. If you can't afford them, you have no business hiring them. The problem happens with people with worthwhile skillets underselling themselves. These employers will always have a pool of stooges to hire if you quit. It undervalues the market standard, making it difficult for experienced designers or developers to negotiate salaries because others are setting a precedent for them.
@AmieB2005

@@charlimarieTV It is the way it goes, but I don't agree with it and also refuse to settle for it if I were a candidate seeking employment. City limits shouldn't dictate salary limits. Especially if you are in tech, where you conduct business all around the world. Business charge whatever their product is worth no matter where they are. Doesn't stop them from making a buck. Why should it stop them from paying people based on their skillsets and title?

I think when your past experience isn't directly in the role you're applying for you need to show the hiring team why the skills you learned in the other role make you a good fit for this one. Don't leave it up to them to reach conclusions about how with web design you are designing UX/UI too technically, just with a bit of a different approach. Show them why that past experience is super relevant to your current role and how it makes you a better designer.

@@charlimarieTV thanks Charlie :) I had an experience where I did ask for the range first, they told me it but said I wouldn't get the top end of their range if my current salary was near the bottom end of their range. They said your current salary shows your 'experience' - which I think is rubbish! Anyway, I didn't give away my current salary but I wonder if I did get further into the interview stages whether they would pressure me into saying my current salary just so they can 'figure out' what I should be paid there. I guess if a company aren't happy with me not wanting to disclose my current salary then maybe they aren't the right company. Thanks for your reply Charlie :)

When I was technical recruiter, I always presented “realistic expectations” of the client contract. They may have a long job description list, but in order to have success with the Job you need these three things or areas. I think many people may be asking “ so what happens when you reach the top? I like this kind of structure for pay and it seems it is better for people that want to grow professionally and money is not the main motivation.

I think a better way to look at it is that it's up to you to convince a company that you have the skills and experience to be worth a certain salary by demonstrating that you will bring that value back tenfold to the business. but that's why i LOVE our standardised salary system, it means that your salary will wholly depend on the experience you bring and no one one needs to pull numbers out of the air and negotiate.
