@@joshythehand2960its not how it worked in the book: barlow could speak, he was a Type One vampire, one of maybe a dozen in the entire world. Basically, the movie's portrayal of Barlow rendered him mute and also looking like Nosferatu (in the book, he was much like Dracula, could shapeshift/change his appearance seemingly at will). It's amazing how unsettling well dressed older men can be so menacing. James Mason looks like the nice grandfatherly type under different circumstances, but in this scene, he's pure menace and evil-taunting the priest, cutting a deal for faith against faith and the parents death means nothing to him. As a teen in the 70's we had couple in their 60's move in next door, first generation immigrants from Germany. Both of them were very nice, had children and grandchildren that would visit. His family were blonde, blue eyed beauties. She would give me home made strudel and he would whittle beautifully crafted wooden whistles and gave me a few. My father was ex military and after a few months of knowing them, a conversation about WW2 came up. Turns out this guy had fought on the Eastern Front to the suburbs of Moscow, and back to Berlin. Didn't really register with me until I got older that he'd probably engaged in some pretty horrific events. One never knows who they're dealing with.

Masons' Straker was MUCH MUCH better than the shit performance of Straker created in the 2004 remake. Donald Sutherland is another excellent actor, but they totally screwed up his straker. Mason's version really steals the show.

How I love this movie. How I adore the book by Stephen King. There is absolutely no humane traits in these vampires, only the evil upon which the lore relies. Although the remake with Rob Lowe follows the book more closely, this, for me, is the ultimate in vampire horror. Thanks for sharing.

The book is absolutely fantastic. I thought I had read all Stephen King's early stuff but I missed this one. its too bad that King now just writes these big chunky books for the summer holiday market, for ppl to doze over on the beach. Because the guy can really really write. Salem's Lot is like a dark Cannery Row. I read it and read it again right away...real vampires, not these nice Twilight vegetarians or insanely sexy True Blood (tho of course I like True Blood, but its not proper vampires) These are hideous creatures that live in the dark..I love the way King doesnt have them in polished coffins, but hidden about the town in abandoned freezers and car boots and behind old shelves and in cellars and under rotten old shacks...like vermin....infected vermin...fingernails black with earth scratching across the window...and a stinking rotten smell wherever they are hiding..a stench of charnel pits when they open their mouths...the scene where Marjorie Glick comes to 'life' is just the most terrifying thing I ever read. "A hand fell out from beneath the sheet and the fingers began to dance jaggedly on the air, twisting and turning...she was on Jimmy in a hunched scrabbling run and Ben saw the sideways predatory lunge of her head as she battened on him..Jimmy Cody screamed the scream of the utterly damned..." I read this whole scene paralysed and I didnt realise my old cat, who is now thin and light, had leapt on the bed and come silently right up to my face, waiting for attention. I tore my eyes away from the book and turned my head and the cats huge eyes were Right. Next. To. Mine. and she miaowed at the same moment so the sharp teeth were flashed by the lamplight.. I must have a strong heart because I felt it simply stop. and restart with a jerk.

When the cross didn't work he didn't understand why and he showed fear at Barlow's very appearance, proved he had no real faith in his own religion and god. That's why Barlow grabbed and crushed the cross to both prove and expose the hypocrisy and the fear of the preacher before killing him. When he stepped up to Barlow he accepted the challenge, and he would have won, if only he believed, but he died because he gave into his fear. We all claim to be "Fearless warriors for God" that we'll slay demons, etc. We talk the talk, until we're put to the test to prove it, as you see in this scene.

Well worth seeing and owning...Make sure to get the"Mini Series" version and not the "Movie" version released in Europe which was terribly edited, omitting both the prologue and epilogue, as well as much of the character development which made this film so great. The Rob Lowe (2004) remake was interesting...but it is in no way in the same class as this masterpiece. David Soul, James Mason, Bonnie Bedelia, Lance Kerwin, and Reggie Nalder (...playing Mr. Barlowe and uncredited in it's original presentation.) were all fantastic in this. Never gets old!

The Shining sucks. Book is awesome. Movie is lousy. Zero characterisation. if it wasnt for Nicholson, it would be nowhere. They didnt show you his breakdown through the booze, and Danny was just a scared child, not the brave kid dealing with huge issues. They didnt have the terrifying hedge animals and the woman in tub scene was laughable and in the book its really frightening. Whole book is scary. Film is just stupid. Why did Jack go mad..it doesnt say. There's no sense of the Overlook being a malevolent force. He just pointlessly goes nuts. Carrie is probably the best adaptation. I so love King's early stuff.
