@lloydhofer Parasitic wasp is the Braconid Wasp (google for parasitic images). It deposits eggs under the flesh of the caterpillar (usually of a sphinx caterpillar, not hairy caterpillars). The eggs hatch and the larva eat their way through the caterpillar to the outside and spin little cocoons which is what people see on the caterpillar. If the cocoons are opened at the top the wasps are gone. And of course it is always fatal for the caterpillar. Wasp = good guys, caterpillars = pests.

Hi Yvette, I've seen parasitic wasp eggs on the back of caterpillars before. Those 4 large hairy tufts are supposed by some to be a defense against those types of wasps. They resemble wasp eggs to the wasp also, fooling the wasp into finding another host for it's eggs. Lots of organic farmers try to host these kinds of wasps to help with pest control. Very informative video, I too am a science geek, so I enjoyed it, thanks.
