It makes sense to call 0.5% alcohol alcohol free. Alcohol naturally occurs in many foods to varying degrees. Orange juice for example contains somewhere between 0.16 to 0.73% alcohol. Makes more sense than labelling OJ as containing alcohol haha. Used to love a can of shandy as a kid also.

@jess-nt9wh I also know people who are allergic to alcohol but for them, at least, it's actually the sulphates used in alcohol production that they're allergic to. That being said, there's nothing to suggest that someone can't have an allergy to the alcohol itself. It seems to be possible to develope an allergy to pretty much anything. The fact that they do not have to put alcohol on the label of juice does not make it alcohol free. It is just not a requirement. That is what does not make sense to me. For anyone wondering about the "single use yeast" that was mentioned on the beer can, in many cases breweries harvest a "yeast cake" from a fermented beer and use it to create further yeast cultures. This could be done for cost reasons but can also allow the yeast to evolve some different characteristics over time, for better or for worse. In the case of this beer, the yeast is only used (pitched) once, which guarantees a more consistent flavor profile as fresh yeast is always used.

I worked for a time in a tiny restaurant and international market. There is something truly glorious about eating something knowing only that it is edible with perhaps a name of some sort in English (though that might not always have anything to do with ingredients and even the ingredients may not be in a language I knew). Discovering flavors without knowing what it is supposed to taste like is a refreshing experience. @@ferrumignis I'm more of a ginger ale person myself, but don't get me started on the fact that virtually every single soft drink now has artificial sweeteners. Not only do they taste abhorrent to me in most cases (or cause stomach issues in the case of the sugar alcohols which are, sadly, the most palatable ones) but in the case of one sweetener, I'm legitimately allergic to it (hives, the works) and it is starting to be in more and more things now. God help you if you have phenylketonuria, now. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against artificial sweeteners in principle; everyone should have the choice of sugar alternatives where possible, and I don't believe all the chemophobic nonsense spread about them. But I *do* object to having my choice removed because the PTB have decided that sugar is evil and even the "regular" version of sodas will contain them because I'm not capable of deciding for myself if I want to rot my teeth with it now and again.

The reason why a lot of "alcohol free" beers still have 0.5% is actually really interesting! Well, first of all, unless you were drinking spectacularly fast, the body processes that little alcohol too fast to actually get anything even remotely similar to drunk. The more interesting reason however is that, MANY foods you can buy in a grocery store already have that ABV or higher. Some research has shown that - depending on the brand - Apple Juice ranges from 0.06% - 0.66%, Orange Juice ranges from 0.16% - 0.73%, and Grape juice ranges from 0.29% - 0.86%! Bread too, with Rye breads reaching around 0.3% and American Burger Rolls can be OVER 1% ABV

I think .5 percent is the legal limit for "non-alcoholic" in a number of Western countries not to distinguish it from truly alcohol-free products like milk, but to distinguish it from products like kefir or kombucha, or other fermented things that naturally contain an amount of alcohol, but not enough to worry about people getting drunk off of it (also because it's nigh-impossible to remove all of it reasonably easily). The real question is why Listerine and similar don't require ID to buy.
@JustAnotherBuckyLover
Жыл бұрын
The reason why it's called "alcohol-free" at that low ABV is because it's almost impossible to drink enough of it to counter the liver's processing power. A study in 2012 tested this out on students, and even the highest BAC achieved was less than 0.01% after drinking 1.5 litres of a "non-alcoholic" 0.4% ABV beer in an hour. For reference, the UK driving limit is 0.08%. In order to get a high enough BAC to actually feel drunk, you would need to consume so much liquid that you'd risk harming yourself by causing an electrolyte imbalance instead (so-called "water poisoning") before you got drunk enough to really feel it - even if you are a lightweight, like me (generally speaking, a BAC of less than 0.05% is regarded as "subclinical"). That said, if you are on medication which says not to consume it with alcohol, like certain painkillers or antibiotics like metronidazole/Flagyl, or you are in a country with a 0.00% BAC driving limit, don't drink anything unless it's specifically listed as "0.00% alcohol". However, as you will find a variety of fruit juices (including both orange and apple), as well as many fermented products including yoghurt, kefir, kombucha, and certain kinds of vinegar, can also contain as much, if not more, alcohol as these beers, I wouldn't worry too much in most cases.

Being able to call beer with 0.5% alcohol "alcohol free" has to do with tolerances allowed on food products. For example in the US the tolerance a number on the nutrition label 20% higher or lower in actuality. So its safe to assume here that the calories stated on the label are 20% lower than reality and the protein is 20% higher.

A friend of mine recommended Lucky Saint to me as I mentioned I was trying to a find a no (low) alcohol beer I liked and not having much luck. When I next saw it I bought some and have to agree, it's better than most but still tastes slightly watered down to me. Best ones I've found so far are Ghost Ship by Adnams (the full blooded version is one already one of my faves so perhaps a little biased) and also Brooklyn Brewery, Special Effects (odd as I rather disliked their Brooklyn Lager). These definitely have more flavour and body than others I've tried (IMO of course).

I believe one reason why anything below 0.5% abv can be classified as "alcohol free" in the UK is due to the large number of products that contain small amounts of naturally occurring alcohol that aren't in any normal way "alcoholic drinks," such as sugary drinks like cola. I guess they had to draw a line somewhere, and figured 0.5 was near-as-dammit.

The Brewery I work at makes a 0.5% beer that's advertised as "alcohol free" and as it also says on the side of the can that it contains less alcohol than in a ripe banana! So I guess while it's not strictly speaking "alcohol free" those looking for an alcohol free option are perfectly safe drinking it if they wouldn't question eating a banana...

Why didn't you use the can opener on the Lucky Saint? Very inconsistent.

Hi AS! Have you ever thought of doing a zero budget food challenge and made it only from what you can forage or otherwise get for free?

Putting salted egg on snacks is a fad that started a few years ago- you can find salted egg anything nowadays (to be fair, people do love their salted egg).

I live in the united states and I have never seen an energy amount on a can of food items. It is a great idea to see which foods are high in energy. Thank you for showing that. 😊

I've always wondered how they work the energy content out. I'm guessing it's similar to the school science experiment where you find out how much energy is in a peanut by burning it then using it to heat water.

Alcohol free beer is the weirdest thing in a can I’ve seen!

The pull tab directions made my day, though 😅 Also: I hope, this is going to be as tasty as it sounds. I'm really intrigued.

Cool to see. Always interesting to see different snacks. Curious what it would have looked like if you cut off the seaweed wrapper and sort of unrolled it. Cheers!

Slim 250ml soda cans completly replaced the old 330ml cans, which then reappeared as beer cans, replacing 500ml. At least where I live. Is shrinkflation happening in the UK, too?
