In this video I talk about the 3 key types of flies that I use when trying to catch Sea Bass on a fly. I am still relatively new to this type of fishing but have had a few people ask me about different aspects of this type of fishing so thought I would share what I've learnt and my experiences so far.
The first fly or type of fly is a surface popper, these come in all shapes and sizes, the simplest being a gurgler which is simply a folded piece of foam and a couple of other materials to make a body and tail to the fly. Stripped back with reasonable force these flies create a disturbance on the surface which when the conditions are right, the bass can't resist.
The second is the Deceiver fly, a sub surface fly that due to being unweighted will fish down to about 2 feet when using a floating fly line. This is a great baitfish pattern and in different colour variations can mimic many different types of prey for the bass.
Lastly is the Clouser fly, originally designed for freshwater bass in America, it has found popularity as a saltwater fly all over the world and is particularly effective for Sea Bass in the UK. It features a heavy dumbbell eye that helps it work that bit deeper when fishing water up to around 5 feet or when you just need a faster sink rate. I caught my first bass on one I'd tied myself but tweaked the design to use a bead chain eye that is slightly lighter than the usual dumbbell, this means it gets down in the water a bit quicker but can be worked in reasonably shallow water without dragging the bottom.
If you'd like to see more videos like this one please let me know in the comments and I can cover more aspects of how to fish for Saltwater species in the UK.
Tight lines!
