I love those "live at Mintons" recordings, light weight? who cares. They give everything , no holding back. An artists, artist.

Superb as always, Sir Ken! I have Stolen Moments (the reissue of Trane Whistle); Swingin' Till The Girls Come Home; and The First Set-Live at Minton's co-led with Johnny Griffin! I'll put those on the turntable tomorrow and thanks again for your post on "Lockjaw", overlooked and underappreciated, but brilliant in my humble opinion, my friend!

I love the music of Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis and Shirley Scott. I found "Big Beat Jazz" on King Records and the two of them are out of this world on that obscure lp.

Lovely piece on Lockjaw, thanks for sharing. Just pulled out Jaws with Lockjaw and Scott to hear the synergy between the two and you're right, she sounds like she's having a blast, compared to my recent listen to Turrentine's Hustlin', which felt uninspired in places.

Love your videos, Ken. I've developed a deep love of Jazz over the last few years and it's been very rewarding exploring all the beautiful music. That's a gorgeous Thorens you have there, would love to own one but a wee bit pricey at the moment. I've just started making videos myself and having fun with it. I like various genres as you seem to. All the best, John.

Are the cookbook records the best place to start with him or another LP?

Nice review. I even see one I missed! Very underrated but many of his titles are tough to find on cd as they get issued and then supply quickly dries up. His Prestige stuff is a league or two above the rest of his catalog.

Thanks Ken, IMHO The Tenor Scene, Very Saxy and Trane Whistle are all outstanding recordings. How about a Gene Ammons overview ?

He's one not to be missed. He could play as leader, co-leader, sideman, or balladeer with a tight in the pocket groove. Check out Gentle Jaws cd if you can find it as that features some of his slower Moodsville stuff with Red Garland, who was John Coltrane's pianist while at Prestige. If you don't like it, the discs can resell rather quickly.

You have to buy the one made at Montreux 1977 on Pablo, one of his 5 best to my feeling, and his, as he told me a lot about this one.

Too weird, I just received a 61 mono copy of "Trane Whistle" the day this video came out. You know what that means? Your jazz psychic projections are working or you've been in my mail... "again". But seriously, this is a killer LP. After getting my mits on some of these early Blue Note and Prestige recordings I'm really beginning to understand what you've been talking about in regards to "the sound of the room" and the "punch" of mono recordings. Great video Ken, keep em coming. 👽🖖"Na-nu"
