We don’t get to choose our family only our friends. I appreciate her sharing about her father. Despite a person being mentally ill, it does not take away from them being a parent, showing up the only way they know. Despite my mom being mentally ill, I am thankful and grateful for her always.

This comment is sooo how I see it. She was showing us (the viewers) that two things can be true at the same time! The trauma of mental illness both on the parent and the family on the whole… AND the deep and love of a parent and respect for the difficult nature of it!
@patriciaelder6656

@@twoaveragepeoplepod When you have a parent that is mentally ill, it impacts the persons quality of their life and the lives of each family member differently. But we also have to understand the importance of our mental health and the need for us to maintain ourselves at all cost if possible. My mom stayed with us always periodically she would spiral down despite her taking medications, that was the point where she would have to be hospitalized. Yes it was traumatic at times, but I choose not to be a victim of my circumstance but a victor. I get to show up for my life, where as some point along the way my mothers course of life was changed. This is how I show my love and honor for my mother and her life. But we also have to remember she did not start out her life like this, therefore I know how life can change. My mom showed up the best she could, despite all things. It’s difficult for other people to understand because it has not been a part of there journey.

@@l.a.7034 Thank you for sharing. No one understands it until they have lived thru it. But when you have a parent that is mentally ill you also understand that nobody knows exactly what led to the cause. Some of the things they do make no sense, but to the family that loves them we often look back with love, laughter and fondness. And many times the only thing you really have is your immediate family, because people tend to distance themselves when they don’t understand. That is always my saying Family is everything. The way I live my life is to honor my mother.

It's hard to see abuse of any kind and just being around it will make you victimized as well. Remember not to do the same bad things you saw growing up that were wrong and abusive. Break the chain in history. No one has to act like their abusive parents. My husband hated his parents and he will still follow what he saw. If a man hates his mother, he will do to his wife what he wishes to-do to his mother. You need to help yourself. Don't abuse. Break the chain and don't let history repeat itself.

My father has mental illness. His father may have had mental illness as well because both turned to alcohol and drugs. His father who he did not knkw and died homeless, frozen in the streets of Chicago in the 60s. My momma told me my grandmother told her was "All he needs is a good woman." Whuch in hindsight in her opinion zhould have been a clue of what was to come. They met in the mid 70s, dated for a year, then I was born. He was in the army, but came home on weekends. Once discharged, they fought and yelled..y momma had a scratch on her face from him. All the while, he is drinking, smoking weed, getting paid on a Thursday, and not coming home until Sunday with no money. The final straw for her was she left for school, and when she came back in the afternoon, I was still in the same clothes, in a diaper, around his friends, who were drinking and smoking. She made the decision to leave when I was 3. He kidnapped me on a rainy night, and I remember that. My momma played detective, found me at some lady's house. But before that she had slashed his tires with an ice pick. She saw him come out the apartment, she left him know she was about to do damage if she had to, by waving something. He saw it and took off. When she went up to lady's house the woman said, " I knew she was taken care of because of the way she was dressed and her "wonder woman" underwear. He spent decades on the streets, homeless, addicted to drugs and alcohol, in and out of prison. All while only seeing me maybe 6 times by the time I reached 12years old. My momma worked, provided stability, morals, and ethics, raised me well, and never spoke badly about him to me. She passed in 2017 and in 2019, I was driving to work and saw my father on the streets. Something I thought would happen. I have him my number and some months later I got a call, from an unlikely person, who said, "You need to come get your father. He's too old for the streets." So, I started the process of getting him help. Now, 3 years later, he is off the streets, not completely sober, but in a better situation. I told him he should be thankful for having a child by someone who was a good woman because she didn't raise me to be hateful towards him. He drives me crazy, and we will never have the traditional daddy daughter relationship, I am at peace because I know he is okay.

Thank you for caring enough to help your dad despite him being in that situation. And yes you have some peace because he is off the streets. You mom understood that your dad was lost even to himself. My brother suffers from psychosis, and he ran away from home three years ago. I don’t know where or how to start looking for him. But everyday, I reflect on the good he did for me growing up. Every birthday he bought me a birthday cake when no one else in the house did. Despite his psychotic episode from the night before, he just always remembered to buy me a cake on my birthdays. He gave me the most important advice about being a sister and a lady. Whenever I get upset with my sisters I remember the advice he gave me and I calm down. Whenever I’m out in public, I remember to stay polish because of the advice he gave me. No matter what, I think of the good he did and not the bad. His psychosis didn’t allow him to do many good things for himself and others. He was un-medicated when he ran away and I truly do miss him a lot 😢.
