It doesn't really matter whether you win the poxy award or not - this is a superior song to anything I've heard in a very long time. It's poignant, authentic and speaks about an issue that so many have been sadly touched by in our communities. They'll probably pick some polished turd that the industry execs feel should be the next big thing and, as usual, miss out on what is truly meaningful. The passion and pain behind your songs is what music is truly about. Keep pressing into the climb. EDIT: he won.

Im a 40 year old man from the mountains of Northern New Hampshire. This song kicked me right in the face, this version specifically. Very small town, winter more than half the year, poverty all around, it’s a rough life for most. Half the men (boys) I went to school with are dead, or dead inside. When I see them I recognize their faces, but not their eyes. Opiates have gripped these mountains like a fucking noose, it’s absolutely devastating to watch, and live with on a daily basis. Everyday I hear of a new death, a new overdose, and it makes me fucking anger. I’m not a saint, I’ve battled my demons and lost many times. I just hope this can reach someone, and let them know there is help, you’re not alone. Reach out, anytime.

This hits home. We all tussle with the black dog. Some out loud, some in silence. And is the silence that kills. Talk, ask, reach out. Someone will grab your hand. If no one, a song can make you feel seen. And not alone.

Thank God for Sam who is a TRUE musician and songwriter! I'm so blown away by the poignant topics and real life experiences put into music that feel like a wave crashing over me every time I hear them! THIS is what music is! THIS is music was meant to be! What really sticks with you in a lot of Fender’s songs is the bewilderment that he doesn’t have the answers. "How am I supposed to change it if I can’t see the wood for the trees?"
