As I watched the 2020 Australian bushfires destroy lives and homes, I felt helpless.
As I watched smoke fill up my city, I felt helpless, but also a sliver of hope. Maybe this was the final sign that our government needed. A last message - that drastic action needs to be taken to combat climate change. To change the way we consume. To save the future.
As I watched my federal government and Prime Minister address the nation, I felt anger. No urgency. No recognition of the underlying issue. No empathy. I wonder - how do they sleep at night? How do they sleep, knowing that their actions (or lack of) are contributing directly to the acceleration of climate change? How can they love money more than their children's future?
I'm not a lawmaker and I know simply being angry leads no where. The next best thing I could do was channel my frustration into a dance piece to convey a message to my friends, network, and viewers. To encourage them to vote for the next generation of brave law-makers. To vote with your dollar. To vote with your actions and voice. I've listed resources and ideas below on how you can make a difference at an individual level.
After all, what use is money, if we have no planet?

3Rs
🍃 Reduce - consider your everyday consumption. Do you buy unnecessary things, e.g. buying clothes you don't really need, spending money on pointless items? Do you often throw out food you haven't eaten? Do you really need UberEats, or can you spend the extra 10 mins to go collect your takeout? Remember - if people stop buying useless products, companies will stop making useless products.
🍃 Reuse - where possible, ditch the single-use items and invest in products that you can reuse, like glass containers, reusable cutlery, refillable items. Bring a container to your favourite takeout place. Bring your reusable bottle wherever you go. Invest in high quality, more expensive clothes that will last.
🍃 Recycle - learn about your local recycling. Educate on products you buy, and what can be recycled. Look for products with recycled plastic. Again - if more people buy eco items, then companies will produce more eco products. You play the role in driving demand. Vote with your dollar!
