The offside line is at the the furthest back foot of the bound player from the SAME team. The English player on the ground is out of play - his feet don't count. The position of the All Blacks' feet also should have no bearing on the English offside line. However, the English number 18 is technically part of the ruck when he 'binds", to the advancing All Black player, who is himself also bound to the ruck. Therefore, because Lawes is in front of the English number 18's feet, he is technically offside.

just checking re the re written offside at ruck according to RFU is Offside lines are created at a tackle when at least one player is on their feet and over the ball, which is on the ground. Each team’s offside line runs parallel to the goal line through the hindmost point of any player in the tackle or on their feet over the ball. If that point is on or behind the goal line, the offside line for that team is the goal line. does that mean in the event of a no contest "ruck" its the back of the nearest opposing player or the nearest part of an opposing player ....if their facing your team with arms stretched out is it their feet or arms that become offside

If you pause the video at 0:56, then play & pause it to move through each frame to 0:57 sec, you see that the ball is still 'in the ruck' with TJ's hands grasping it at this stage. At this stage the lead NZ player at the front of the ruck has not yet moved forward/planted his feet to extend the length of the ruck. At this stage, CL is clearly still ONSIDE. Play & pause the video again to continue to the next frame (still at 0:57) and TJ has moved now moved the ball backward and has elevated the ball slightly off the ground. This constitutes moving the ball OUT OF THE RUCK. The lead NZ player has still NOT YET planted his feet in their new position at the front of the ruck and CL remains ONSIDE at this point. In the next frame at 0:58 there is s simultaneous movement by TJ, who continues to elevate the ball further off the ground and backward out of the ruck (now with clear daylight between ball and ruck), and the lead NZ player who has now planted his feet further forward, extending the ruck length and placing CL front foot in front of the 'new' offside line (only by a distance of centimeters). CL has not yet moved further forward from his original position. In the next frame, CL begins to move forward to attack TJ and the ball. Importantly, when the NZ player moves forward, the ruck is stable and has been stable for several seconds with no new English or NZ players entering it, and with no English players on their feet and competing in the ruck. At this point, CL is at least half a meter BEHIND the established offside line (even if it is taken from the feet of the most forward NZ player). He is not 'flirting' with being offside in order to position himself to best attack the halfback and is playing the game well within the rules. The lead NZ player has stopped and then moves forward over the top of the only English player in the ruck, who is on the ground and not moving or influencing the ruck. This is done while the ball is sitting at the back of the ruck and is timed so that it coincides with the exact moment TJ picks up the ball. Even if this is to constitute creating a new offside line which places CL offside before TJ attempts his box kick, then by this ruling, everytime there is a box kick, a player at the front the ruck can simply take 1 or two quick steps forward in a stable uncontested and established ruck as their halfback pics up the ball, while the player behind is 'bound' only by an outstretched arm which is touching their leg to apparently maintain a full ruck and extend its length significantly at that moment. This is not how the offside rules at the ruck have been designed to work and not how they are intended to be used. If it is, then there will not be any box kick which is contested by a genuine charge down opportunity in the future. This is an example of one of the way the ABs are tactically superior to any of the nation in the world, by far. They operate in the grey area of the rules and put pressure on referees to make decisions which favor them over other teams. But some of their tactics, such as this, should be seen and understood by referees as just that, tactics which are not in keeping with the laws as they are designed or intended and it is the discretion of the refs which should identify this and keep the match played in the correct fashion. This was a clear error by the referees and yet another game result determined by, I am sorry to say, an unforgivable bad error. They were dupped by good smart, but negative and illegal tactics of the ABs. Refs have the hardest of jobs and people will never be satisfied with them e.g. SA and England last week (a call which I believe the refs actually got right). But this is a substantial error of judgment and should have been overruled by the on-field ref. Watch the reply frame by frame and you will see what I am talking about. FYI, I'm not an England fan and I am someone who admires the intelligence and ability of NZ rugby very much.

I'm not an expert on the laws of the game, despite being a keen fan, but some of the very informed comment below suggests to me that we should do one of two things: 1) Not employ a video referee at all and allow the ref, aided by the linesmen, to make decisions. Or, 2) Only allow the video ref to guide decisions in UNEQUIVOCAL situations - coupled with 1 or 2 options only per team to use this technology. I suspect this would need to be aided by more robust technology as seems to be employed in football VAR where you can freeze frame and rotate an image to see exactly where a ball sits with a 360 degree view. I'd be OK wiith either approach - but only option 2 only if unequivocal means unequivocal. The current system whereby we end up discussing hairline decisions on KZitem often seems to me no better than allowing a referee to make a judgement call. At the price of various interminable delays.

They amended the tackle law this year to prevent that so they don't have a repeat of what happened in the England - Italy game last year. So if it is not a ruck but a tackle, CL would need to be behind the hindmost point (not just feet) of any player in the tackle area on OR off their feet. So it would make the offside even worse as he clearly did not retreat behind the hindmost point of the tackle area.

Jean Lynch They made their point because the AllBlacks first team couldn’t beat England who had 14 international players unable to play. It’s pretty pathetic play by the best team in the world, who plays their first time to only win by 1 point, if I was Steve Hansen I’d be embarrassed

@@dominicspicer9390 14 international players unable to play? They still had 23 international players who were able to play. They were also wearing that beautiful Red Rose. They lost at home in conditions that favour their type of rugby and yet you think NZ are pathetic? Blimey!
@filgus497

Noone can say nz are pathetic... But jeez what is it with all blacks fans online? Everyone knows you're the best team in the world, you should be flattered that you're always the bench mark, not offended every time a team comes close to beating you. The fact is this game could have gone either way. Conditions and venue shouldn't matter too much to a team as good as nz, but england (who have had a pretty poor year, and are always under scrutiny) proved that they are capable of matching the best in the world, even if we aint exactly consistent. very positive signs for england, that's all. thats something to be respected by nz fans, not cry about. England kept nz to one try and made them resort to penalties and scrums, thats an achievement regsrdless of the result. Its also a compliment to the all blacks to even say that. Like the man said, they made their point, that's it, now leave the whining to cheika and co

The TMO called it, so to be consistent with last week, we England fans have to accept it and move on. I think the argument can be made about consistency in refereree judgement calls. Most of the game both sides were stood offside, didnt feed the ball in straight etc. It seems fairly random and arbitrary when they then decide to pick up on it and you can see why fans and players get frustrated when this happens. Still, Underhill has the makings of a great 7 and the way he wrong footed Barrett is still brilliant.

Furthermore, the camera is not in line with the ruck, it is behind the English defensive line so there could be a parralax error. Fair try. England, this time your were robbed. AND, doesn’t it have to be conclusive video evidence to overturn the ref’s decision. I wouldn’t call that conclusive.

Rugby Laws Rule 15 Rucks Point 7: A player must bind onto a team-mate or an opposition player. The bind must precede or be simultaneous with contact with any other part of the body. England #18 was not bound to the ruck therefore Lawes was not offside. Touching the ruck, as England #18 was, does not qualify as being bound and part of the ruck. AND Point 13: All players in a ruck must be caught in or bound to it and not just alongside it. England #18 was not bound. Again, I’m and Aussie and will always barrack for the ABs v England but England was robbed this time. laws.worldrugby.org/?law=15&language=EN AND the ABs left foot is in front of Lawes as the AB halfback picks up the ball so Lawes is still onside. I’m not looking at the vision with NZ or pommie blinkers. I’m Australian, land of the 7th best team in the world.

The TMO shouldn’t have got involved unless the offence was ‘clear & obvious’, which given all the comments was clearly not the case. That said the ball was out and as such he wasn’t off-side. Underhill should have been awarded a try that people would be talking about for years to come.

I must say that camera angle is rubbish. Its nowhere near square with the offside line at the base od the ruck. As a player we are taught to be behind the hindemost player in the ruck and that the offside line runs parallel to the goal line from there. He is offside if you have a square angle between touchline and camera and I assure you that this angle is not. Have a cry and move on
