This has to be one of the most ghoulish tragedies I have ever come to know about. Scores of people suddenly buried under the wreckage of what was once a shopping department store in a blink of an eye. Around 500 of them dead. And the CEO was so careless and greedy to let the building be built the way it was.

Indeed. The original design was a stable and sensible building for which the "concrete slab" technique was perfectly sufficient. Then they removed half the columns and installed an extra floor and put heavy equipment that should have been on the ground on the roof, to the point that the original firm they worked with no longer wanted to be associated with the project.

I(a Korean) remember this incident as it happened a day before my birthday and I was forced to stay low as the whole nation mourned for the deadliest single accident in the history of the country. I also remember reading about a story from one of the survivors on the newspaper, a man who jumped into the elevator area which didn't collapse, as the rest of the building began to give way. Anyways there are a few things I want to point out. The building is described as a residential building in the video, but to be exact, it was planned as a small local commercial building for tenants(no residential suites in the building itself), very common in apartment complexes in Korea. During the ones built during the 80s, these buildings are usually two stories if they are small, larger but no taller than five stories if large. The late 80s and into the mid 90s, Korea has witnessed a huge economic growth, in which, Lee Joon foresaw the upcoming growing demands in retail, thus altering the building's plan into a much larger department store. Also I would like to add just a little more explanation to the equipment added for the floors on the 5th floor, the restaurants. Korean people are accustomed to sitting on the floor, which is heated by stone. This is still very common method of heating in Korean houses, even if they are high-rise, modern condos. The weight of this traditional heating system has contributed to the collapse. The Sampoong incident may seem like a disaster once in a while but like I mentioned above, during the economic boom from the 70s all the way to the 90s, many structures were poorly built in order to cut cost and time, have caused numerous disasters specifically during the 90s which the nation will never forget. An interesting fact. The site of Sampoong was redeveloped into a high-rise luxury condo in the early 2000s, which one of the tenants is the current president of Korea in office, Yoon Seok-Yeol.

Thanks to growing up along a fault line (and getting pinned under a TV/dresser), I go running for cover if there's even a slight vibration. We like to think we're invulnerable as long as there are 4 walls and a roof. The reality is your house could easily be broken into by any determined mofo with an ax. Or brought down by a drunk driver (both have happened multiple times) Tall buildings are just death traps unless they're properly designed for natural disaster. They might be a death trap just by design. There was a tower above a church In NY, that a single strong wind could easily collapse, and no one knew until an architecture student emailed the towers creator. In SF there was that apartment building slowly tilting during construction, and management started accepting leases with full knowledge that the tower was sinking. They were secretly fixing it when a newspaper caught wind of the BS.

Fun fact: despite their isolationist nature, North Korea spread news of this disaster wildly. They were talking about it because they were using it as propaganda. Essentially North Korea showed what had happened to the store and said stuff like “See, the South Korean government doesn’t care about their citizens like our government do. They are willing to build unsafe buildings just to get rich. They do not care if you die in these buildings.” This is quoted from an escapee from North Korea who guest starred on a South Korean news segment, and on the BBC There’s belief that North Korea also utilized 9/11 in the same way, ignoring the fact that it was a terrorist attack and the collapse was caused by planes.

If you want to watch the historical context for this disaster and more real footages from actual broadcasts from 1995, you can search '시대유감, 삼풍 - 모던코리아' by Korea Broadcasting System, our national television. It is entirely in Korean but if you care enough, you can learn Korean or maybe submit English translations.

I remember when this happened... I was a little kid.. 500 people died out of no where.. None of them thought they would die that day. But since this happened, there have been millions more that died.. We don't know when our last day will be. Let us come to know our Maker before it's too late. Jeremiah 29:13

There is a 4 storeey building in my buildings which was suppose to be 7 storey but the council stopped them proceeding after buildings on the side start to crack. However now they are building additional floors and added new generators on the roof.

I was thinking the same thing! I sadly don't know either. If I ever find it, you'll be the first to know.

Yeah. I think I saw this on a 90s TV list of top 10 manmade disasters. I think it was #8 on the list.

You actually can't write a more stereotypical greedy executive businessman than Lee Joon.
