Episode 677: BG Ch 4
The verse ‘Brahmarpana’ pertained to the Jnani. From ‘Daivamevāpare’ till here, the Yagnas pertain to Karma-yogis or mumukshus (Longing for liberation). Those who comply with these Yagnas understand the yagna-tattva & hence wash their impurities by performing Yagnas.
yajñaśiṣṭāmṛtabhujaḥ yāntibrahma sanātanam nāyaṁloko’styayajñasya kuto’nyaḥ kurusattamaǁ31ǁ
Those who perform the above Yagnas & thereafter consume its remnants which is nectar (amrita), reach the eternal Brahma. Even this world does not exist for one who does not perform Yagna. Then how can Svarga & other heavens be obtained by him?
That which remains after the Yagna completion is Yagnaśiṣta. It is not equal to nectar. It is nectar!
Until now Bhagavan taught 16 types of Yagnas. If anyone is performed in the stipulated method & its remnants are consumed as prasada, then he eventually attains the eternal Brahma if he longs for liberation.
For one who performs any 1 Yagna daily, the life here & hereafter will be happy. He will gradually obtain Jnana which will lead him to liberation. The person who does not perform even 1 Yagna a day, does not obtain even this world ( he does not obtain happiness in this world). How can he obtain higher worlds?
Bhagavan will now conclude the discussion on Yagna.
evaṁ bahuvidhā yajñāḥ vitatābrahmaṇomukhekarmajān viddhitānsarvān evaṁjñātvā vimokṣyaseǁ32ǁ
Thus, many types of Yagnas are spread in Brahma’s face. All of them are born from karma. This understanding grants liberation.
Brahma means Vedas. Brahmamukha means in the Vedas. The Yagnas are propagated by the Vedas. All Yagnas are born from verbal, physical & mental actions. Charities etc. are bodily yagnas; penance etc. are verbal; mind-restraint, sense-restraint are mental yagnas.
Yagnas do not come from the Self. They emerge from non-Self. Because the Self is devoid of action. ‘These Yagnas are not performed by me. I am devoid of action’- this understanding is samyagdarshan. It will liberate you from inauspiciousness known as samsara- says Bhagavan. In Brahmārpaṇa & other verses, having samyagdarshan was called Yagna.
śreyān dravyamayādyajñāt jñānayajñaḥ parantapasarvaṁ karmākhilaṁ pārtha jñāneparisamāpyateǁ33ǁ
O tormentor of foes! Jnana-yagna is superior to Yagnas performed using ghee, wood & other materials (Dravya). All actions along with their fruits attain completeness in Jnana.
Yagna performed with dravya generates result. But Jnana-yagna generates no fruit & hence is superior.
We are stupefied with this as we are focused on trivial fruits & not on the infinite fruit. Obtaining Self-knowledge is the ultimate fruit. In reality it should not be addressed as a fruit as once that fruit materializes, the differences such as a fruit, the person obtaining the fruit, & the person enjoying the fruit no longer exist.
Jnana-yagna is superior to dravya-yagna as Jnana is like the water everywhere (2nd chap- Yāvanartha udapāne). It says that without impediments all actions merge into Jnana, which is the means for attaining liberation. He addresses this as ‘parisamāpatam’.
The 4 bets in gambling are krta, treta, dwapara & kali. Krta is 4 points, treta is 3, dwapara is 2 & kali is 1. The person who has won krta has won the other 3 because in 4, the numbers 3,2, 1 exist. He who understands Raivka’s Self-essence in this way, in him the good actions of all entities merge, says Chandogya Upanishad.
Self-knowledge cannot be purchased with wealth. Only with Guru’s blessings one experiences his Self. It cannot be obtained from good deeds & charities seeking renown. It can be obtained only by one who has no pride. Only a pure-minded person who has devotion to his Guru can obtain it.
Let us hear Raikva’s story.
Raikva Maharshi taught King Janashruti that all meritorious deeds merge into Jnana.
King Janashruti was a pandit & could decipher the language of all creatures. With compassion he gave many charities & performed meritorious deeds. His renown spread wide. He delighted in it. Slowly pride entered. He believed that due to his meritorious deeds liberation was his.
One Fullmoon night, he was sleeping on the terrace recollecting his good deeds & renown. He heard some voice & opened his eyes. He saw 2 swans talking as they flew past.
Among them, one was flying ahead. The swan flying behind said, ‘Do not fly close to Janasruti’s palace. The vibrations emerging from his renown reach heaven. If you fall in the rays known as his renown, you will be burnt. None matches him in good deeds’.
The other swan laughed & said, ‘What prompts you to praise this King? He is a lover of praise. He engages in good deeds only for renown. Is he in superior to the cartman Raikva? Is his bliss greater than Raikva’s bliss? Is there any comparison between the Self-realized Raikva and him? Being a Maha-jnani, Raikva accomplishes everything without moving’
