Episode 696: BG Chap 5
Sacred places, river banks, confluences, mountain caves, slopes, & peaks, sacred forests, isolated gardens, temples, near bilva tree, oceans, & own house are places loved by the mind. Tantra-granthas declare them to be ideal for Yoga-sadhana. A Yogi should never reside in places despised by the eyes, or prone to disasters. That which gives stability and comfort is āsana says Patanjali Yogasutras. (Those who cannot sit down due to health problems can sit on a chair).
Manu says- health improves by rising during Brahmi muhurta. He must rise by 4 AM, complete the bodily needs, bathe, complete his daily ordained duties, & pujas and begin meditation.
samaṁ kāyaśirogrīvaṁ dhārayannacalaṁ sthiraḥ
samprekṣya nāsikāgraṁsvaṁ diśaścānavalokayanǁ13ǁ
praśāntātmā vigatabhīḥ brahmacārivratesthitaḥ

The body, head & neck should be firm & unmoving. Without gazing elsewhere, he must fix his gaze at the tip of his nose. With a tranquil mind & without fear he must restrain his mind while following Brahmacharya. He must fix the mind completely upon Me, Paramatma, firmly believing that I am the goal. He must be immersed in meditation.
The body, neck & head can shake even when straight. So Bhagavan firmly states that they should be retained without shaking. Seated firmly he must gaze at the tip of his nose i.e. he must ensure that his mind does not travel towards sensory objects. (Daily practice of 40 mins. surely aids in meditation. Begin with 15 mins. & gradually increase the time. Once you are addicted to meditation you will never give it up).
Focusing on the tip of the nose is not the important point here because with this focus the mind will meditate on the nose & not on the Self. Hence, it must be ‘as if he is seeing the tip of the nose’. While retaining the mind in ekagra, he must fix his gaze & ensure that it does not move.
He should be tranquil & devoid of fear. He must do Guru-seva, beg for alms and follow other disciplines mandated for Brahmacharis. He must restrain the mind, fix it on Paramatma & with the firm belief that there is none superior to Him, and meditate with concentration.
One with attachments has his mind in one place and devotion in another. But a Yogi has his mind and his devotion fixed on Paramatma. Only such a person can be addressed as a Yogi. Now Bhagavan will explain the fruits of Yoga.
yuñjannevaṁ sadātmānaṁ yogīniyatamānasaḥ
śantiṁ nirvāṇaparamāṁ matsamsthāmadhigachhatiǁ15ǁ
The Yogi who has mastered mind-control eternally fixes his mind on meditating on the inner Self. He obtains that ultimate peace which is in Paramatma’s control & which culminates in liberation.
The Yogi who eternally restrains his mind as taught above, secures his well-being. Ultimate peace is called liberation. Such peace is in Paramatma’s control. Understand that surrendering completely to Him is peace & liberation. The Yogi obtains them.
nātyaśnatastu yogosti nacaikāntamanaśnataḥ
na cātisvapnaśīlasya jāgrato naivacārjunaǁ16ǁ
One who eats excessively or inadequately cannot succeed in Dhyana-yoga. One who sleeps excessively and one who totally abstains from sleep also cannot succeed.
A person should eat as much as is essential for his survival. He who overeats cannot succeed in Dhyana-yoga. Some stay without food at all! They eat once in 3 days, or overeat & then stay without food for very long. This too is incorrect. Neither should he eat too much, nor should he abstain from food.
Shatapatha Brāhmanam says- Food protects one who eats only as much as necessary. It does not harm him. Excessive food harms. Insufficient food cannot protect.
Yoga shastra says-
Artham savyajanānnasya tŗteeya mudakasya tu
Vāyōḥ sancaraṇārtham tu caturtha mavaśēṣayēt
½ stomach should be filled with solid food. 1/4th should be filled with water & 1/4th should be left for free movement of wind.
Similarly, he who sleeps excessively or inadequately cannot master Yoga.
yuktāhāra-vihārasya yuktaceṣṭasya karmasu
yuktasvapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkhahāǁ17ǁ
Yoga dispels all sorrow in one who is moderate in eating & relaxation, moderate in sleep & waking states & is balanced in work.
That which is consumed is food (āhara). We address this as ‘annam’. Vihara means ‘to wander’. Both food and relaxation should be moderate. Overeating and excessive recreation are not good. At the same time, he should not totally abstain from them.
Even work should be balanced. One must not overload himself with unnecessary work. Even sleep should be regulated. He must go to bed at a specified time & awaken at the specified time.
Those who regulate in the above master Yoga which destroys the misery called rebirths.
Overeating causes diseases, reduces longevity, destroys our ability to reach the heavens, and pushes us towards sin which brings us infamy. Hence it must be given up.
