The two phones are literally the same in terms of their hardware and software. Both come loaded with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box powered by 2 quad core processors and 4 GB of RAM. That’s quite a lot of power for a smartphone and is also amongst the most powerful smartphones out there.
Both the devices look extremely similar with the same design, material and design language. Both of them have Gorilla glass 4 at the back and the front and come in dual tone colors - like the Gold Platinum in my hand. At the bottom, both the devices have equally loud and clear speaker, USB 2.0 data syncing and charging port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack - with the note 5 carrying an exception of the stylus.
On the top edge, you’ve got a microphone as well as a Nano SIM card slot. No microSD card slot to expand storage. Oh and both the devices are 4G LTE ready.
Both the devices are covered with tough Gorilla Glass which really lends a lot of class to the overall design & use the same dual tone material that reflects a different color when light falls. But with great design, there were some compromises. The batteries are non-removable and there is no microSD card. So the entire device is a unibody shell with no access to battery and no means to insert a microSD card to expand storage. But there is one noticeable different between the body design of the two devices.
The Note 5 has a curve at the back. So if you look at the flip side, you’d see that the edges curve a little and blend in to the metallic edges. The Note 5 is also a bit thicker than the S6 edge plus by about 0.7 mm - though the difference is negligible - you can still feel it when you hold the devices.
While the S6 edge has an absolutely flat back. There is no curving at the back, but of course - the edge is known for curving of its display on the front and not the back anyway.
Both the devices feature a 16 MP primary camera with Optical image stabilization, real time HDR and 4k video recording alongwith features such as Live Broadcasting, Pro mode and many more.
In the front, both the devices have a 5 MP camera with 2K video recording.
The Note 5 is about 20 gms heavier and 0.7 mm thicker thanks to the inclusion of the stylus. But the Galaxy S6 edge plus definitely feels more pleasant to hold, seems easier to use and carry. It is lighter and definitely looks sleeker as well.
both the devices come loaded with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and I’m sure would be upgradable to Android 6.0 Marshmallow as well. But this is where things start to shake up a little for the Note 5. The Note 5 comes with the S Pen and hence augments the S Pen with software features adding more value to users who actually intend to use it productively. As you take the S Pen out you’d see the air command menu which brings out the amazing things one can do with the S Pen.
New Features in the Galaxy Note 5 not there in the S6 Edge Plus:
1. Air command
2. Air View
3. Screen write and Scroll capture
4. Action Memo
5. S Note
Antutu Benchmark score:
Galaxy Note 5: 69,000
Galaxy S6 Edge Plus : 68,000
So if you were to really decide between the Note 5 and the S6 Edge Plus - there is really just one key differentiator and that’s the S Pen and the extra features that come along with it. Otherwise, both the devices are equally capable with the same powerful processors, RAM, internal memory, build quality, camera performance and display. The Note 5 is definitely a bit heavier and thicker and that makes a bit of a difference in the overall user experience - but definitely not a deal breaker by any chance.
