The HDMI Black Level settings have ZERO DIFFERENCE in quality, as it is simply supposed to be set to match what the connected device is outputting its RGB values in (either full or limited RGB). If you set it incorrectly, you will either wash out or crush+overbrighten detail. Just leave it on AUTO unless your device is reporting its RGB ranges incorrectly(probably not happening) LOW setting is for LIMITED RGB. Normal setting is for FULL RGB. Both ways will have identical picture. Mixing Low/Full or Normal/Limited will mess up the picture's detail

The HDMI Black Level setting differs from the RGB range. The HDMI Black Level on your TV determines how it interprets the signal's black levels, while the RGB range on your device sets the range of colors it outputs. Matching these settings is advisable to avoid picture issues like washed-out or crushed blacks. RGB range is usually best set to FULL for dynamic range color grading. I kept changing the HDMI Black Level between Normal/Auto and Low, and trust me, setting it to Low is the best change I've made on this TV. It completely removed the dusty-looking filter. Note that the HDMI Black Level setting might be disabled if you set the TV to Game Mode and 144Hz. However, changing it to 120Hz unlocks this setting even in Game Mode, allowing you to set 12-bit color (12 bpc) too.

Great review and you also made great comparisons with QN90C and C4 but I'm sorry to say this, your picture settings are totally off. Colors should never be set to native because some of colors are totally wrong and oversaturated on native. The same with hdmi black level, it shouldn't be at low, it crushes blacks and highlights. On top of all this you even enabled color booster which you also shouldn't. I had 42" C3, 43" QN90C and have 43" QN90D now next to 32" LG IPS monitor and 32" Innocn IPS Mini Led monitor which have really accurate colors and I did set QN90D so that it matches the two monitors. Trust me your settings are totally off with lots of black crush, missing highlights and very oversaturated colors.

I noticed that setting the HDMI black level to "Auto" can make shadows too bright, ruining the black contrast. Revealing hidden details, you will see colors crushed in shadows. Switching to "Low" truly transformed the experience for me; everything looked deeper, and blacks were much more concentrated, giving an OLED-level feel. However, I agree that the color booster is not a necessary change. Using the normal color slider yields the same results. I set the colors to "Native" because, on "Auto," yellows appeared off-like egg yolks with strange highlights and blue too, they lacked the deep saturation. Overall, it made the colors look washed out. I don't know how our opinions are contradictory, but I suppose it comes down to personal preference. I spent hours trying to optimize the picture to what I find appealing in different scenarios, gaming, desktop, watching. Now I don't need to do anything special when changing between them. I feel that everything is quite visible and, to my liking But I understand you may prefer other picture refinement settings, i showed the ones I feel are best based on what I can see, I still use them, this TV is my daily driver, I absolutely love it

@@TECHOSAURAh, my mistake, I see you are using windows in HDR, that's a different story. Though you have all these settings turned on in SDR because this truly makes a horrible picture in SDR. Your settings are fine for HDR but unfortunately QN90C and QN90D don't have a very accurate picture in HDR. It looks wrong compared to my Innocen Mini LED monitor, no matter how I change the settings. Some colors are simply off all the time. For example my Sony 65X95J is way closer to the picture of Innocen Mini LED monitor in Windows in HDR but Samsung is known for not being the most accurate while Sony has one of the most accurate image of all TV brands. I don't use windows in HDR anyway, I use it in SDR only and both QN90C and QN90D are nice screens for Windows in SDR. I have to say LG is on par with Sony regarding accuracy, the 42" C3 that I had before QN90C and QN90D was really accurate in both SDR and HDR, it was just as accurate as an IPS monitor but I couldn't stand the tinting and ABL. It was really distracting and annoying for Windows usage, imo a lot more than the contrast and color shift from VA panels on QN90C and QN90D.

Thinking about dropping my 42C2 for this TV. I use it strictly as a PC monitor and am tired of worrying about burn in. Hate the fact that the C2 lowers its brightness when i play certain games. I love the contrast and black levels of OLED but am concerned about blooming with the Samsung.

Tbh, you shouldn’t be concerned about blooming. Samsung has been working quite well on increasing local dimming zones. I believe it’s ~500 in this one. Also, it’s good at controlling them. However, the panel latency is what you should be concerned about. There’s a significant downgrade going from OLED. To me, personally, it’s the worst thing about it, but as I said, for gaming and watching, it’s not noticeable, mostly if you scroll But I suffered from the same things you did with an OLED. It's frustrating

Great review, I was looking at another video about the QN90D and they said the 43" has a wide angle layer this year (bigger models have the ultra wide), can you confirm this? Maybe by comparing the viewing angles with the 43QN90C! On my 43QN90B when viewing straight on and 1-2m from the screen if I move my head a little to the sides I can see the colours change saturation towards the edges of the screen. Does the QN90D do that or can you view it from straight on now and not have any colour shifting at least? That would be a big improvement over the QN90B to have more uniform colours like an IPS panel at least when viewing straight on to it and even a little off angle before it starts to become noticeable and still have those great VA black levels. Maybe you could make a video comparing the QN90C to the QN90D for viewing angles. From this video it looked like it's improved! VA panels are not going to have the same angles as IPS but they can improve them. 😀 For the video, if you could sit in front of the screen with the camera around the centre of the screen and move it so it's looking at the right side of the screen then back to the center and try to notice if it changes saturation and do black levels deepen then lift in real content from 1-2m away? Colours always shift on mine and in darker scenes you can see the shadows deepen, when moving from the centre of the screen to the edge then it starts to lift the shadow detail when moving back to the centre again. So i'm always seeing less saturated colours and lifted blacks towards the edges of the screen when viewing from the center. But it isn't too bad really when you're enjoying something, but could be better. 😉 Edit: Actually both the 43" C and D say they come with wide angle layer now.....what?! Still would like to see it action though if you could and hear your comments on it!

Thanks for your input. I recently compared the QN90D to the C4. kzitem.info/news/bejne/uqZ_r5Wws6OngKwsi=wBqtYY5mutATaHFO Part 7:31 focuses on the viewing angles. You can see that on the C4, no matter how we sit or move, colors and brightness hardly change, while on the QN90D, it shifts just like any VA panel. I don't recommend using it at all while sitting at an angle; it destroys quality 100%, and the image looks horrible. Human skin looks desaturated, like super pale, and all the beautiful colors you could see while sitting in front suddenly become ugly and washed out, and you even see white halos from text weird stuff to say the least. While I know you are interested in the QN90C versus the QN90D in this regard, I can 100% tell you that they're the same in viewing angles, panel coating, and most of the physical appearance. I hope to help, but I don't recommend getting this TV if you care about viewing angles. As for me, I don't care because I use it as a personal desk case, so I sit in front and don't care what quality others see up, down, left, or right 😜 Please let me know if you have any questions

@@TECHOSAUR Thank you for getting back to me, i'm not sure if I communicated my question here effectively. What I meant was if you are seated looking at the centre of the screen from 1-2m away, is there any shifting in colour or blacks if you just shift your head a bit to either side of the screen? In other words I don't really care about having great off-angle picture quality but it should at least have decent colour and near black uniformity over the entire screen when viewed from the ideal seating position, centre or just slightly left or right of centre even. How is the colour and grey uniformity over the entire screen in real content from the centre, ideal position and only the ideal position? Is what i'm asking. 😀
@TECHOSAUR
26 күн бұрын
@barryjones2366 I sit over a meter away and I can firmly say that viewing quality never changes as long as you are centered. Of course, not being accurately in the center is also fine. Things get bad if you sit at, like, a 45-degree angle. I don't know your standards for calling a beautiful image; each person could have a different opinion, but to me, personally, it's lovely and goes with my way of calling it a nice image, not 100%, but I never feel like, "What a horrible display or image it is!" Just make sure you follow my settings. I'm not saying this out of being a know-it-all, but because if you don't make those changes, I would give the quality a 50%. So, in order to get the experience I'm describing, you need to use the settings I've applied then ofc decide what's good for you On my QN90D display, I don't see any bad uniformity or dirty screen, while on the QN90C, I've seen it. I don't know if this new series got upgraded control over those issues. Also, the panel color tone is way more factory-calibrated. I can't help but feel that this generation is getting more quality control checks because on mine, I don't see any gray smudges or bad uniformity. It's hard to say 100% pure, but it's easily a 9/10 for this. I hope it was useful, please don't hesitate to ask anything about it, I feel happy to answer and make sure you learn about it
@barryjones2366

@@TECHOSAUR Thanks, maybe it's best explained this way, VA panels normally have terrible viewing angles and from viewing them close up they are especially bad (like my 43QN90B that I use for a PC monitor) so even when viewing it from the centre position there is an effect that happens called vignetting, where the edges of the display are less saturated and has more lifted blacks than the middle. In fact the centre part of the screen normally has black crush and as you look from the centre towards the edges the blacks get more lifted and colours less saturated....even when viewing from the centre. This is not ideal and is why one of the main reasons IPS panels are preferred over VA for PC monitors. Yeah so what I wanted to know is, is the screens colours and greys uniform across the whole screen from the centre position with the new wide angle layer? You can check by moving to the left or right side of the screen (still fairly centred but just centred more on the right/left side of the screen instead of dead centre). And notice does the pictures colour saturation increase and greys darken at the edges of the screen or stay the same from 1-2m away running real content of course? You just need to rock back and forth between the 2 positions (with content paused) and notice do the colours become more and less saturated depending on the position of your head and during darker scenes with grey in them, do those areas go from darker to lighter? Oh I forgot to mention you should look at the same spot on the TV from the centre and edge to notice if there is any change, so you're testing the colour and grey uniformity to see if it is actually uniform across the whole screen, so no dramatic shifts in it's characteristics. To do this you can look at the right/left side of the screen (right/left edge) from the centre then move your head or chair so you align with that side of the screen (so you are centred on that side of the screen) you may have to do this a few times with different scenes and see if you notice any changes like those mentioned above. 😀 There could only be subtle differences or dramatic differences you never noticed before doing this test, I normally test with a darker scene to test the grey shift and something with a bit of colour to notice the colour shift. Hope that explains it better. If there is no grey or colour shift from different positions then that means you have got a really uniform screen (nothing to do with DSE) from the wide angle layer they added. To at least give you a decent viewing angle from the centre position so the screen is more colour and grey consistent and uniform across the entire screen.

I never had the QN90A. I started with the QN90C and up. If you have the A, after yours there are the B, C, and now D models. There are significant differences in many aspects by now. First, the mini-LED was first-generation back in 2021 also the NEO QLED tech, and now it has improved with better local dimming, better upscaling, better HDR, colors, and an anti-reflective finish. Also, HDMI 2.1 is on all 4 ports, while the QN90A had only 1 port supporting HDMI 2.1. You can expect a lot of improvement over your current one in terms of panel and software. If you had the QN90C, I wouldn't say it's the case, but I think for anyone with A or B, it's safe to say it's going to be an upgrade.

It's still a VA panel, and viewing angles are the same, not the greatest but the improvement I've seen is in local dimming, and I don't see dirty screen effect. Also, the panel on the QN90C used to be a bit tinted with blue. It wasn't giving me a true white on an all-white background; only when I put them side by side did I realize this. I set the color tone to "standard." The QN90D is much better in that manner. Could it be my panel was just bad on the QN90C Reading some reviews, it seems that the biggest upgrade lies in the newer chip, which is able to process images much better and upscale. This could be the reason behind the better local dimming I'm seeing as well. Still, it's not the biggest upgrade, as the QN90C was really great. I used it for a whole year, and I couldn't be happier.

I just did a small test I made 10 boxes, the most left is 1px then 2px etc until 10px on the far right I then took another picture from the side to see the blooming as squares get bigger and based on what I can tell from it, I think the count is less than 1000, I think 500-720 ibb.co/qk2N5Sn ibb.co/fGFw6Yr

ofc it max at 120fps, but on the PS5 dashboard its always 60hz, it's capped, plus VRR is on so it gets above 60fps at 26:48 it shows the connected HDMI device specs VRR 48hz - 120hz and supported frequencies

I.m afraid the colors are too saturated 😢

U can reduce the saturation easily, I've tuned it to about 15 with cooler booster on high

@steinvynck774 If you look at it from an angle, it will get terrible and washed out, which will destroy the whole image. But straight forward, it's decent. I love it more than the LG C4 OLED. Personal opinion.
