Not sure why anybody would be whining about ads in your videos as there's not really that many. Maybe 5 in 30 minutes? And you can usually skip those after 5 seconds of play. Otherwise one or two might run 15 senconds with no skip option.....big deal.......smh

SAFE is indeed the child lock mode. Not sure why it was on. Probably so much noise on that power rail that the micro was freaking out. On some models, there is a button called c.lock on the remote that cancels it. On others, you hold power or play for 6 seconds.

Oh for the days when you could take off the bottom panel and get full access to the underside of the board...

Content authors have no control over adds. I can't even watch my own videos on my own channel without getting hammered by adds. A few months ago KZitem changed things, they obviously want everyone on a subscription. Adds every 3 minutes is now the norm, and sometimes non skipable ones, depends on the traffic viewership. Sorry folks, now you have to pay to play.

the lack of wires in that vcr is pretty amazing. there's like two flex cables and that's it. a big change from the 80's models with dozens of connectors and seemingly miles of wire. The amount of integration and simplification is pretty high on that, it must be near the tail end of VCR production. I still am amused by the single sided board with the dozens and dozens of jumpers, and that it ends up being cheaper that way vs. a 2 layer board.

Plot twist: It says safe because it thinks it's OK with the fault and isn't in any danger.

Someone reversed-engineered the VCR Plus codes and came up with a code generator. And yes, it was easier to generate a code and use a VCR Plus than the alternative, especially when you had to deal with a cable box.

Awesome repair as always, I remember the days of having the codes in the papers for programming the VCR, it used to be called G-Code here in NZ and also the method that Panasonic used as you mentioned.

I have a similar Samsung VCR, bought new in 2004 for just 59 EUR. Tape transport is not very robust, there is a gear assembly that is engaged for the fast (very fast) rewind, but it broke due to a cassette whose tape apparently was a bit sticky. I had to glue the gear back, not sure how long it will last, plastic is already brittle after 16 years and not very high quality to begin with.

the SAFE on the display means "safe mode" its to keep tapes from damage from detected malfunctions, this is a rare feature on some vcrs, that vcr is a treasure. i always loved watching vcrs operate growing up, such fascinating machines, brings back soo much memories using them to watch movies and repairing them too, i also still have my vcr plus remote device along with a few vcrs, they still work. and camcorders some are non functional and some day ill get them working.

We had an alternative to VCR Plus back in the day. It was called Showview. Actually maybe it was the same thing, just branded under a different name for European countries. Just a bunch of numbers. If you punched them in correctly, the VCR automatically set itself to record the specific TV show. To many people it was just faster to set the VCR timer by hand because the shows never actually started exactly on time. It was safe to set the recording five minutes earlier and end it fifteen minutes later due to commercials.
