Blend bites me too. Not to bad after I let it sit for a few months. Getting used to it now. Great review Brother

I love it. I’ve had 3 bowls now and ordered 300grams. Being in the US it’s as hard to get as Esoterica. If I’d known how much I liked it I’d have gotten more. Wasn’t able to get cabbies mix though. Made a mistake and removed from cart. Was sold out for good 5 min later.

I spotted a tiny 50g tin in my local tobacconist the other day for £18.45 ($22.43). Not cheap! 🙁

Hi Happy Piper - question from a new piper, how does this Full Virginia Flake taste with some age ?
@centralparkpiper
6 жыл бұрын
Hey simon, that tin is from November 27, 2017. The first two digits are the day of the month and the last 3 digits are the number of months since December of 1995 when they first started using the dating system. A tin from the dec 1 1995 date would read 01 001. Also, Just want to say that I wouldn’t use that big plastic storage bin to store your tins full of tobacco for two reasons. The first point you mentioned but I want to throw this out there. Pipe tobacco is not like cigars in that opened they cannot be stored together as they will take on the scents and flavors of the tobacco around them. Second, plastic is permeable and it will also soak in tobacco flavors and smell but more importantly it will give off the properties of its chemical makeup to the tobacco. Because of the bio processes that take place in the aero and anaerobic aging of the tobacco it can do some funky things to the plastic and more readily create off gassing. I know keeping jars around can be difficult, I’ve found that the basic 4 ounce ball jars are perfect and small enough in size to mirror roughly the same space as a tin would. You could put a bunch of tobacco filled glass sealed jars in a plastic bin with no problem. Hope that’s helpful

Central Park Piper thanks for the good advice. The open tins in the plastic are smoked so not really left there for too long. Anything else is jarred. I might still listen to your sage advice and get some more smaller jars. Thanks

No sure why I watched this. I have smoked pounds of FVF 40 tins currently in the cellar. You don’t dump the ash while smoking? Rotf. It’s ashy because you have ash on top of the tabacco. All blends are ashy if you leave it in the whole time. Best Virginia ever produced period.

When you jar it, do you put in an airtight jar? Sorry to bother you I am newer to pipes, and flake cuts. I have 1 tin of this unopened. If you like it Simon, it has to be good.

From what I have read, the date of your tin is November 27, 2017. The first 2 digits are the day, the last 3 are the month starting at 001 indicating December of 1995. Each month since then adds one to the 3 digits. I’ve read this in a few places, but you know how the internet can be. (Oops, Central Park Piper beat me to the punch! At least we both can count 😂)

bpruk I was really doubtful when I first saw that, but my tins do line up to the extent that the 3 digit numbers seem to be consistently 3 to 4 months prior to my actual purchase date, at least in my sample size of 5 tins. Maybe their database software is as old as their machines, it is (was) Y2K compliant, that has to count for something 🤣

Does this blend have that cigarette/ashtray smell and taste? I’m trying to figure out if the ‘cigarette’ taste comes from Burley blends or if its simply inherent to all tobaccos.
@sotysowickabrzezinski4761
4 жыл бұрын
definetly depends on the blend. Burley tobacco tends do be a little harsher, and ''darker'' having a nutty aroma. Virginia on the other side, when maturing, accumulates sugar (after opening a tin of straight virginia the sugar can be even noticable, in the form of cristals). That's because the starch in the tobacco, becomes sugar. Therefore after some time, virginia tobacco can be sweet, and fruity. Being and ex cigarette smoker, i can definetly assure you that this flake - as well as most pipe tobacco in general, maybe other than a straight burley, which generally people dont like, is absoulutely different from cigarettes, and even cigars, in terms of the aroma, and smell. The tobacco used in cigarettes is processed differently and of a lower quality (some rolling tobacco can be really tasty, but in general big tobacco doesnt focus on the aroma when making cigarettes). Cheers.

although, keep in mind that pipe tobacco is still tobacco. It's not an ejuice, or molasses. When smoking it you will still taste a heavy, smoky aroma. The taste of this tobacco is just much more complex, interesting, multi dimensional. Obviously the room note of pipe tobacco is much more pleasant than cigarettes too.

I use to like it but it is to much work. It should be about smoking. We forget about this. We get lost too much in this tasteing thing. We get kinda snobbish about it. When it needs to much work ( to prepare ahead because it is too moist, to relight it about 2000 times to be careful not to burn it to fast etc) it kinda loses its purpose. For ex Rattray’s nr 7 needs none of that but nobody speaks greatly about it. We became a little snobbish in my opinion. But great video !

I hear you. The point of these videos though is to do just that, to review the tobacco as you find it. I don’t think it’s snobbish it’s just the purpose of review videos to get into the details. Lot of SG baccys are very moist and it’s true they need more attention. I guess we have the choice to buy whichever baccy we like. Someone who like fiddling around and enjoys the ritual this tobacco will be an attractive option.
