Pretty impressive lens - F2 is also absolutely great and cannot be found often on APS-C wide angle lenses. Still one "important" Samyang lens is missing on your channel - this is the Samyang 10mm 2.8 ED NCS - which is also especially build for APS-C sensors and will result in a nice 15mm wide-angle view - maybe you can get one for a test !!

Hello Mr. Frost, First of all, I have to say that I appreciate your videos very much. They're always informative and I get a really nice and detailed overview over the lenses performance with all its strengths and weaknesses. Thank you so much for all the effort and time you put in making your videos. But long story short, I have a question about the Samyang 16mm f/2.0 and hopefully you can help me in this regard. I am a beginner and I have a Canon EOS 200D (SL2) Camera with an APS-C sensor and I've upgraded from the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens to the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM because I wanted to have a faster aperture to be more flexible in my style of photography. My favourite 'types' of photography are landscape-photography, macro-photography (I've already got some extension tubes) and I really want to be able to take good pictures of the milky way and the stars in general one day. I've heard that a maximum aperture of f/2.8 is already good for astrophotography but a faster aperture is even better. I wondered whether this lens is worth buying additionally because of its faster aperture and minimal wider field of view of 16 mm compared to the 17 mm of the Sigma lens? Is there really a big difference between a focal length of 17 and 16 mm on an APS-C Camera? And if there's not is it nevertheless worth buying for landscape- and astrophotography because of its faster aperture and very sharp pictures? It would be really great if you responded to my question but you don't have to for sure. Best regards. Julian (I'm a 17 year old student and I'm still learning English. As mentioned before, my English is far away from being 'perfect' and some mistakes might have occurred in this text as well but I hope you could understand in some way what I wanted to say in this comment.)

Hello Chris. Thank you for this and other comprehensive reviews. I recently bought this lens after watching your review and of course analyzing sample images. I am really impressed by the image quality. However, there is one thing noone mentioned about this lens (or maybe I missed). When focusing it only takes a couple degrees of turning of the focus ring to go from infinity to only 1 meter. This makes it really difficult to precisely focus by guessing the distance. At this wide angle everything looks in focus when the focus is set between infinity and 1 meter. But this is the range this lens is likely to be used mostly. I am aware that you need to exponentially increase the amount of rotation of focus ring when focusing closer. However, I believe there is enough room left that could have made it much easier to focus at normal distances. Same thing applies to Samyang 100mm macro lens, but it is a macro and is supposed to be used at macro distances, which makes this problem not a big deal.

I think people are biased when a lens does not have auto focus. I sometimes use Nikkor AI-S full manual lenses from the early 80s on my Nikon and some, not all are extremely sharp still, it is just a matter of knowing how to manually focus. I learned on an old 35mm film camera Nikon FG-20 so I embrace it. Most of the digital generation however, seem almost scared of it. Of course you'll avoid manual lenses for fast action but I do portraits and weddings so when posing shots I love using manual lenses. There is an enormous validity to them. This lens performs quite well, maybe not as great as a pro level Nikkor but you can't expect it to at this price point. Samyang, like Sigma and Tamron seem to really be giving the brand names a real run for their money.

floex831 ***** I learned on a Fuji film camera from 1980s. 10 years ago I was still shooting with it, all my shots were pretty sharp, and I don't remember it taking very much time to focus. But after spending so much time on digital I admit I am worried about adjusting focus and missing the shot. I will definitely be getting one of the Samyang lenses (I think the 85mm 1.4, which is incredible value at ~$250), so I hope once I play with MF again it will all come back to me.

***** On Nikon cameras there is an indicator when a Non-CPU lens is attached to the camera. It tells you what direction to turn the focusing ring in, in the form of left and right arrows. Once it acquires focus the arrows disappear and turn into a green dot confirming focus. In my experience with all the manual lenses I've used to date, it is very accurate, so on Nikon specifically there are assists. Keep in mind that this works with old Nikkor AI-S lenses. Some Samyang lenses actually have confirmation chips that assist even further.

Victor Shikhman It is, as they say, like riding a bike, you never forget. Moreover, of course you're not going to jump back in on an actual paying gig. You're going to practice a lot until you've got it down pat once again. I love manual lenses as I stated in my original post, I learned on a Nikon FG-20 all steel and glass, nothing automated.

Another awesome review. I ordered the Rokinon (Samyang) FE14M-C 14mm f/2.8 UMC Lens and can't wait to get it. I went for it due to slightly wider and it is also for full frame, which when Canon actually does release a 6D Mk II I will upgrade to. Interesting lens that you should try out, the Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 OS. Gives crop sensor camera's a similar range to the 70-200, but is suppose to be much much sharper then the Tokina 50-135. And it's actually suppose to be sharper then the Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS on crop sensor.

I really like that you show what actually happens using it on fullframe. I dream a little bit of buying a sony fullframe oneday and as far as i know they force you to use a crop mode on most af lenses which are designed for apsc. which is really a shame i think. I could easily live with this ammount of vignetting ( or rather just plain black corners) or at least use it for some things. I mean there are things looking better square anyway. . So using lenses that are Manual focus anyway is quite a hack. this on ff is like 12 mm on apsc is like.... its about 3x faster than my 10-24 3.5 and that with a less noisy sensor... sounds kickass. even if i always have to cut the edges.

Sorry for The delay missed your comment :( that sucks It makes the star pattern on long exposures when stopped to F22 look bad. What do you mean A lot of lenses? Ive never seen another lens do this. Even my Sony lenses are Flawless. I understand how apertures work and are made so I'm baffled by this. The only way for this to happen Is if Not all the blades were identical or if One of the holes that lock them into place is offset wrong. When I contacted Samyang about it they said that this was not normal and there was something wrong but B&H told me it was normal. after looking on Samyang's website Even in there pictures the apertures are not symmetric so I'm baffled as what to think?

Just the way it is, really. It's a very common issue, even on some Canon and Nikon lenses occassionally. If it's important to you, then my advice would be to ask to handle a lens before you buy it, to see if the aperture blades are properly aligned. All the best :-)

Then, a Tamron 70-300mm VC lens, and a Tamron 90mm Macro VC lens. But, I have also thought about the quality of these Tamron 70.300mm, I want you to tell me if I should buy those, or Canon 55-250mm IS, or Canon 70-300mm IS (But the last one costs £100 more than Tamron's) Which option do you think would be the best for me? Hola...

I'm using an APS-C camera right now, and want to know if I should just save my money, buy a new body, and buy the lenses I want later? Or is it safe to buy EF-S lenses? I don't know what to do! Edit: I'm interested in Film Making (not much photography).

A friend of mine is selling his cine version of this lens for a very cheap price and I'm hesitant to buy it thinking maybe the optics inside and the image quality compared to photo lens version is different. I'm not into videography but he's selling it for a very cheap price. Have you tried to compare it to photo lens version?

For astrophotography, should i get the 10mm, 12mm, 14mm or 16mm ...? 16 mm is f2.0 which is really nice I guess, more light. But maybe I want a wider view... and most astrophotographers use 14mm for some reason.
@christopherfrost
8 жыл бұрын
+Septimus I'd go for the 16mm f/2 for that extra aperture, or the 10mm f/2.8 if you want a wider field
@WahidFayumzadah

the widest i've shot was 18mm but that's with the kit lens. other lens that I used for astrophotography was the 35mm f1.8, that's too small tho, so I guess anything near 10-14-16mm would be nice. Also have the possibility to get the Tokina 11-16 ... decisions decisions...

Very late comment, but as many use such wide angles for landscape work, then the f 2 is less relevant; would be nice having quality glass with slower speed....have just heard you do not agree!

Hey Chris, I watch your videos before I purchase any lens. Recently I have upgrade my camera from Canon 70D to 5D mark iii. +grammyelblag As you'll see on this video, the 16mm lens doesn't actually give you a full picture on a full-frame camera so the 14mm lens is probably preferable

I think i will go to samyang 16mm f/2 according to dxomark.com the test result of sharpness is very high even in APS-C mount then i compared it from your review it was the same from what you said about the sharpness. By the way i watch a lot of your videos and as a beginner I learned a lot from small details of the lens thanks for the effort. Keep it up :) . Suggestion, please make 1 or 2 minute video about side by side comparison to a kit lens so we will know how huge the jump from kit lens to our new desired lens maybe the video will be all about the sharpness and contrast. Thanks.

Has Samyang checked the lens before sending it for review? Has it undergone a more stringent quality control? I am trying to decide between a Samyang 16mm and Irix 15mm. Some reviews of the Samyang on Amazon report things like "This copy has an astigmatism on the left as well as sever coma. The right has minimal of either, leading me to believe that like many of the Rokinon/Samyang lenses that an element is off center. More than a few buyers have had to return these lenses, like I have done for this reason to get a good copy." How confident can I be of obtaining a good copy?
@StevenMannSlioch
3 жыл бұрын
This is a fantastic, thorough review, but it can only examine one sample, which speaking as a scientist, is not very scientific. One thing I would like to know about a lens is the consistency between copies of a lens and not just the performance of the best of the crop. On that basis, I might give greater weight to a review where it is a purchased copy than one where the manufacturer sent one out for review.

I'm assuming this is lens has a wider FOV on an APS-C than the Samyang 14mm F/2.8, because the 14mm F/2.8 is designed for full-frame, therefore 14mm is 22mm on Canon's APS-C.. Am I correct with this? I doubted myself because I read that this 16mm F/2 gives you a 79 degree field of view, rather than the 14mm EF mount which I read gives you a 90 degree field of view when on an APS-C camera... So now I'm thinking that the mm count of this lens is not already multiplied by 1.6x (the crop on canon's aps-c sensors).. would love if someone could confirm or just advise me!
@christopherfrost
5 жыл бұрын
If you're using a Canon APS-C camera, then you always, always, always multiply the focal length by 1.6x for the full-frame equivalent. Always. So 14mm x 1.6 = 22.4mm, and 16mm x 1.6 = 25.6mm
