This was my second backpacking trip to the Carrizo Plain National Monument. No other place in California shows off the San Andreas Fault better than the Carrizo Plain. It contains world renowned examples of large-scale fault structures to explore (sag ponds, fault scarps, pressure ridges, beheaded channels, off-set streams, strike-slip and normal faults). The San Andreas Fault extends from the Salton Sea in southern California northward for nearly 800 miles where it extends out to sea at Cape Mendocino. The Carrizo Plain National Monument is 246 square miles in size and it is the largest single native grassland remaining in California. Due to the size and remoteness of the Carrizo Plain, it is strongly recommend that you top-off your gas tank in Bakersfield before entering the Coastal Range.
