San Francisco celebrates LGBTQ+ culture all year round, but there’s no time where the rainbow flag flies quite as high as the morning of the Pride Parade.
Capping off a month of cultural events and a weekend of raucous partying that is known to draw as many as one million attendees, the Sunday morning stroll down Market Street is one of the biggest gatherings of the year for San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community, and an opportunity for allies to show their support (pro-tip from Juanita Moore, ask consent before touching or taking photos).
The event started at 10:30 a.m., with typically cloudy San Francisco skies and 60 degree weather giving some of the more scantily clad revellers the chills. But regardless of the temperature, the climate was as joyous as ever as marchers trotted toward the Castro District and the Celebration Village in Civic Center, where many streets were blocked off to make room for stages. As has been the trend over the past decade, many of the floats had corporate affiliations including Apple and Tesla, but there were still plenty of homegrown standouts, like CHEER San Francisco, the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band and D’Arcy Drollinger, the city’s drag laureate, in a colorful Ford truck.
In true San Francisco spirit, many attendees took the opportunity to break out costumes that might’ve been tucked away in closets since last month’s Bay to Breakers race. Some of the most eye-catching included a pink, bedazzled gladiator and Smirnoff ambassadors on huge rainbow stilts.
