I had a teacher who explained why we were 'forced' to do the movements in certain ways. With musical eurythmy you are performing the musical composition in pre determined gestures and movements. This to make a connection between the brain and the space you move in with your body. It may sound very esoteric, but there is empirical evidence that show physical actions during the learning process has a positive effect. Eurythmy is an extension of that 'vision'.

I can't believe I read such thing as the posts bellow. I have been a Waldorf student in all my life. I can assure you. IF YOU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THE ANTROPOSOPHY, YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO JUDGE. This is beyond comprehension. Someone in the posts told that we were forced to do the movements. Yes. OK. But, think like that: There are things that make you life get better. There right things and wrong things. Eurythmy is a good thing for the soul. If you do it, you will feel it. Its not about appearance. It's about feeling and growing up! Try out some time, than come back and telll your experience! :D

Thank you for your observation. These students are not trained dancers. Their achievement I so commendable in exploring the difficult art of Artistic Eurythmy. Thanks again.

Nice vid. In the 1970s in my Waldorfschule near Bonn/West-Germany we had this fabulous teacher Mrs. Bauer. Big class. But just two of us boys loved the eurythmie. Till now don't know why? Maybe because we were somehow forced to do it.

these 'pre-determined' movements.. its just choreography! you get the same in any dance class! and many dance classes come up with more visually stunning, exciting, and passionate performances than this.

You say "arty", but the truth is, those of us children who are Waldorf kids and thus forced to take Eurythmy, not by our choice, aren't doing anything artistic. At all. Really. We're rehearsing something that someone else thought of. Without a single opportunity to make a dance our own, or contribute to it at all. It's about as artistic as memorizing parts of books or entire poems because they're assigned to you, not because you want to, like public schools do.

Yes, dancing to music is important-- but this?? come on. There is nothing creative or passionate happening. Dance has evolved for thousands and thousands of years and this is what they come up with? Just cause some guy, Rudolph Steiner says so? What about actually studying dance? Dance history?.. African dance, Modern, etc.? And learning how to actually feel the music from within and express.. and actually train to do difficult moves that take practice and evolving skill?

Well I've studied dance for at least 15 years. I've taught it to children before. Kids are capable of doing much more interesting things than this pacing around. I just think people should be wary of the Waldorf cult. I know a lot of people really like it and everything, but I don't think it's good to get to boxed into a certain ideology and to avoid other cultures and art movements when it comes to studying the arts- like dance.

No one is avoiding anything. There are many Dance groups following well known dancers (won't cite any because I respect how each one likes a style of dance) using the same movement forever and ever. One known dancer creates some movements with their arms and 20 years later, others are still moving the arms the same way. Originality is something else. HERE you see students, not professionals. There are great eurythmists. I also danced 20 years all type of dances form african, ballet, soul, jazz and found myself bored until I discovered eurythmy which is truly visible music. Before I met eurythmy, I knew just about every move in just about any dance. Eurythmy gives you the freedom of expressing music. Dance, one expresses the rhythm. I've seen a modern dance piece moving with Suite 1 of Bach. I found terrible.Does it mean it was terrible? . No one studied the personality of Bach to make the choreography. So it is a question of individuality. Suite 1 of Bach was done in a way I did not like. And that is fine. I didn't go and write negative things about it. It is the right of anyone to express music through choreography. We like it or we don't.

Are the dancers in this video students of Waldorfschule ?This is better than the video that Japanese boys dance.
