The best thing about this video is not that the Thunderbird 2 model that actually flies. It's that Gerry Anderson has impacted so many people all over the globe, from every nationality and every generation. There could be no greater tribute.

Jerry Anderson is amazing, isn't he! "Jerry Anderson was born in 1929 in the United Kingdom and was a television producer, film director, and screenwriter, known especially for science fiction television dramas and animation works. He employed special effects techniques to create a distinctive style, and worked on projects such as 'Supercar,' 'Fireball XL5,' 'Thunderbirds,' and 'Captain Scarlet.' Particularly, 'Thunderbirds' gained international fame and influenced subsequent works. His creations are loved by a wide range of generations and cherished as long-lasting cult classics. Jerry Anderson is remembered as one who made significant contributions to the genre of science fiction television dramas." In Japan, Yasushi Nishimura has successfully built and demonstrated a flying model of Thunderbird 2, proving its ability to take flight. While it may fall short in functionality and performance compared to the Thunderbird 2 in the science fiction television show, this video suggests that there might be a day in the future when a realistic Thunderbird 2 could actually take to the skies.

Thank you for the brilliant comment! I'm really grateful for your kind words!
Since it is a lifting body you could probably reduce the size of the wings to bring them more in line with the "real" TB2. Some EDFs mounted where the red rings are on the back of the ship would be cracking too! No matter what it looks great in the air and kudos for flying it it Virgil's IR uniform! That was a nice touch!

@@minorich- I wonder if Thunderbird 1 would be possible if you built it with the wings extended? I'd imagine it would fly similar to an X-15. I live in Oshkosh so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if someone showed up at EAA in a manned TB2 at some point! (Actually, looking at yours the center body structure reminded me of a Dyke Delta.)

@@jpatt1000 TB1 should be really quite easy to make fly it has similar proportions and control surface layout to a glider. The folding wings and tail launch shouldn't be too tricky really either - contra-rotating propeller as done in many RC helicopter models to keep the thrust induced roll down. The nearly impossible bit for TB1 would be the horizontal orientation VTOL with the wings out as it does in the show - though folks have been getting close to making a working Harrier Jumpjet so the EDF performance and strong but light weight materials are getting close to that being possible too. I also agree this TB2 looks great, but EDF at the back could be really neat and that looking at how well it flies I think they could probably shorten the wings to look a little more show accurate too. But this is still a really impressive flying TB2 model.

This video needs to go viral as it will bring many happy memories of those who watched those pioneering days of Supermarianation! Thank you very much for the wonderful comment. Your comment is the best one. I will convey this comment to Mr. Yasushi Nishimura, who created this Thunderbird 2. We have received many comments from people in the UK and are very happy about it. I'm sure Gerry Anderson and the Tracy family, including Brains, are also delighted. The wonderful "Thunderbirds" from Great Britain will be watched continuously for eternity.

Well, I'm about 21 months late to the party, cool, very very cool. Was just the other day looking at something about TB2 and similar shapes actually being flyable. Ah! There it is, the Gerry Anderson YT channel, July 26, 2023, program titled, "FAB Facts: Thunderbird Two is Airworthy?" And as others have commented here, the obvious fun and fellowship the group had is noteworthy.

Fascinating! Looks like about a 75-85% accurate recreation. Just the wings are somewhat oversized. But they have to be with just the propeller in the front. It's lovely! And it proves that the basic shape of TB2 is a sound airframe! Such a success makes me wonder. Aren't there RC Jet Engines that are the proper size that would fit into those red pods in the back? If you had a lot more engine power, a modeler might be able to get away with shrinking the wings down closer to the original. I don't think you could put the wings as far forward on the body as the original TB2 (in the show) had them. You'd still need to have them closer back along the center mass as this modeler has them. That's why I think a 100% recreation that flies isn't possible. But you could get VERY close - if you have more engine power. Say... 90-95%? It's probably a fantasy still. But I almost think that if one was REALLY ambitious one could make a TB2 Flying model that could hover in real life like the original. I think it might involve something like the engine vents that a Harrier Jet used to redirect the air-flow downward at four points. But I'd think you'd need a very complex computer system to manage that. So probably not doable at scale. Still... One can dream!

Thank you for the intriguing comment. This TB2 doesn't have a gyro installed. By incorporating a 6-axis gyro for stabilization and increasing motor power to boost speed for flight, I believe it's possible to significantly reduce the wing area. As you mentioned, I think around 90% accuracy in reproduction is achievable.
This settles the question of whether T2 actually could fly!

@@minorich- Very. Although whether it would ever be a _practical_ aircraft is another question. T2 is designed to be a heavy lifter, with two massive jet engines to power it. I dread to think just how much Jeff Tracy's bill for Jet-A fuel was each month ;-)

I don't care if wings are bit big, afterall, it definitely seems TB2 actually flies there in front of you. First, I wonder if it's propeller- equipped, not jet-powered, but it's all OK. Since once it rotates, no propeller can be seen. It's a great idea!😂
