An in-depth chat about pros and cons of various options for tensioning the belt connecting the two shafts of my sand drawing robot.
As I'm writing this description I've just thought of another option: Put a hinge halfway along the arm, and size the total length to be slightly over the ideal length for the belt. Add a spring that tries to straighten the arm.
On second thought: That's a bad idea. Building an ideal joint, that strictly allows bending on one axis, is too difficult to do with basic materials in a home shop. It would add flex to the arm that would lead to the arm 2 pulley axes not being parallel, leading to the belt walking off the pulleys. Phooey.
Unless I did it with a flexure joint? Hmmmmm...
