Definitely couldn't leave any sand in that beautiful blue/green color. Great cut and video

Oh my. Grinding away a lot of nice color! Hard to tell from video, but seems like you could've saved a lot of that color. In particular, I'd have cut the opal in two pieces along the shorter access, isolating the sand to one side. That'd give you a nice, clean square-ish opal on the other side. Then, grind off sand on the imperfect piece for a small, clean opal. Overall, you'd end up with a significantly better yield. Of course, there might be issues that one cannot see in the video that motivated you to take the approach you did. Would've been interesting to hear your thought process while you were deciding what to do.

Hiya mate, You make a valid point I should have talked through the process a bit better, you're idea is great but the back side of the stone and the way the colour bar was uneven depths with the back of the stone would have made it impossible to cab evenly without making it super thin. Medium to high dome is more desirable than flat stones. Next time I will explain my thought process better Thanks for watching :)

Excellent video, sure looks way better without that sand, Even though it's smaller,, Imo, the original cushion cut would have looked awkward, if sitting was used to cover the sand, a Freeform can give more artistic license with setting, I think you made right call, 👍 Looking forward to seeing the setting video, Excellent explanation of pricing Great job all round 👍

Out of interest, had you of cut down the middle of the sand and made two smaller stones, would their combined value still be less than the larger stone with the pit in it? I’m assuming yes. Also how are those cucumbers coming along in the greenhouse? I’ve had a shocking growing season so far this year. Bring on the summer 😂
@W.MOpals

That's a really good question, Funnily enough I had considered a slice then making a pair, the trouble was, that the back of the stone and the colour bar angled downward, so to make an even dome, would results in a low done plus less weight, making the value a lot less. So you're spot on! The cucumbers have been hit and miss this year, had a few come through but not as many as hoped!

Nice one! And a quick & helpful dopping lesson as well…. I also need that coffee before embarking on my opal adventures! Have you ever worked stones to a final polish & they have developed cracks afterwards??? I have just had this frustrating experience…. Perhaps I dried them off too quickly - but I really have no clue
@W.MOpals

Coffee is too good to pass up hah! The only time an Opal has cracked after the polish is if it's unstable material (sometimes the brownish/greenish potch or colour bars are a signal for this) but all too common you cut an opal, then once it dries you see a crack or inclusion you didnt see before, thats why once you're done with 600 grit its really important to dry the stone to make sure you can see everything before polishing :)

You could do what Justin did and drill it out and set another gem in it lol. I just noticed something your wearing a Levi`s tee shirt, Im wearing a LEE tee shirt your wearing a silver neckless with some saint on it im wearing a silver neckless with a 2500$ opal setting and watching you cut opals what are the odds? BTW wearing a Cap is proven to make you go bald just fyi. Cheers mate from a cranky old friend Leafbinder.

I said it would sell easier, I don't want to paint a picture that opal is easy to sell, because it isn't at all unless you price it too cheap as I am sure you know ahah

The under side would have made it impossible to be a balanced stone without making it paper thin on top, much safer to get rid of it than risk 2 paper thin stones, stones that are too thin almost never sell :) Thanks for watching though!
