Since I created this video, Blender has finalized geometry nodes which means that section of my video is out of date. You can see an updated setup with instructions via this imgur album (same one as in the video description): imgur.com/qAOTCuc

FOR ANYONE NOT GETTING THE CURVE TO WORK ON THE NEWER VERSIONS OF BLENDER: Refer to the updated method for geometry nodes in the description. Then after that at the end of the "Instance on Points" node add a "Realize Instances" node and connect it between the "instance on points" node and the "Group Output" node. This should allow the curves to work :)

OH.. MY.. GOD... THIS IS EXACTLY What I was looking for !!! Not the sandbags per se, but the process in Geometry Nodes for it; So useful for FACADES for Architectural structures 🙏

For people watching with 3.2 or above (for now I think) there was some revamp of nodes so here's what I did to use the newer system: 1) Point instance - Instance on Points, drag your object into the menu and connect that to instance 2) Point Scale - I used the scale on the Instance on Points 3) Attribute Random - Random Value, set the min and max and to vector like normal and drag the value to connect to rotation input on the Instance on Points 4) For scale should be same steps but drag the value into the scale input I hope this helps!

Ok thanks for the tip but.... how do you select the object (the sandbag in the example)? I can't find an option under "Instance on Points" that allows me to do this. PS: Geonodes would be great if it didn't feel like everything was new with every damn update -.-!

Thanks a lot man. This tutorial was really simple and clear, it's a shame it's not as popular as it should be.

For those who do not want the wall to be this high: After deleting the vertices above of the grid, you can press the M key in edit mode and choose the “by distance”. Thus, excess vertices nearby will be deleted, and a clean grid will remain.

What do I do when I choose the curve in the modifier tab but nothing happens, when I move the modifier (curve) above geometry it snaps into positions but the end of my sandbag wall are rotated a bit wrong and I have spaces between them on the ends?

I know it's been a while since you've been here but I found a solution. Go back to the geometry nodes section on the grid and after the "INSTANCE ON POINTS" node add a "realize Instances" node then plug the realize instances node into the group output node and the curve stuff should then work

You can use the Realize Instances node to make your instanced geometry into a 'real' mesh. Just link in the node right before the final output node of your geometry nodes. From there you can either apply the modifier, or if you're exporting there should be a checkbox to apply modifiers during the export (helpful if you need to iterate). Let me know if you need more info! docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/modeling/geometry_nodes/instances/realize_instances.html

Hey Will, any way you can do an update or explain the steps with the new update? I've tried following the guidance from people in the comments but its not nearly as clear as your instruction.

Sure! I'm a bit blown away that so many people found this useful. I originally only made this for my father to follow along, so I was surprised to come back to this with so many comments. Geometry nodes has changed a lot since I did this, so I'll try to make a new video before the new year.

@@vector_arrow Dude this has been great. As an absolute beginner I found this easier to follow than the famous donut tutorial. You are quick and to the point its just all around great. You have a real knack for this.

Hello! Thank you for the tutorial! I was only looking for a tutorial on how to create a sand bag and I was thinking on duplicating it to stack up a wall of them but this made it 10x easier. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting that there was a tutorial for what I was trying to do 😅. But I have a quick question, in the attribute randomize node it doesn’t give me the axis to rotate ( it only shows a max and min value) What can I do to enable it?

Apply the modifiers before you export your model.

It's a nice idea and you explain everything very well and precisely. However, it is now completely unusable due to more recent Blender versions. An update would be cool :)

Hi mate, great tutorial, though it looks like Blender has been updated and you can no longer go add > point > point instance, instead it looks like it has been replaced by Instance on Points, however there doesn't seem to be a way to select the object that I can see. If you know the new method for the same effect, please do share. Cheers
