From the STURDY BOOTS Album Release concert. With KIT BAILEY on percussion, MURRAY CAMPBELL on oboe and violin; MAGGIE MCKAIG on guitar and accordion, RANDY MCKEAN on reeds of every size and kind, GERRY PENEDA on bass, and LUKE WILSON on tenor guitar and pedal steel.
LOSIN YOU was inspired by reading about the long friendship between the wonderful songwriter Karla Bonoff and musician/singer/producer Kenny Edwards. They were briefly in a band together, BRYNDLE; he was her producer (also produced Linda Ronstadt); I like to think they may have been sweethearts for a while, and then, for years, they were on the road performing all over the world. Diagnosed with cancer, he continued to perform, but on tour with Karla in Colorado, he was hospitalized and airlifted back to his home in Santa Barbara, where he died. I'd had a falling out with a beloved musical colleague, and it was not hard to imagine what it would be like to never be able to play with them again: LOSIN YOU is the song that emerged out of that intersection.
The song turned out to be sadly prophetic: Gerry Pineda, playing bass in this song, in this concert, and on the entire album of STURDY BOOTS, , was also battling cancer; he'd been given some experimental drugs that allowed him to carry on-as he put it, "to play music and be with my family as long a possible" - but not long after this concert, those stopped working and he died a few months later. I am so glad to have this testament to his playing and his sweet and deeply committed presence.
