About 34 years ago I worked for a company building milk tankers for AMPI. There's nothing quite like a USDA inspection. Every weld inside those tanks had to be finished completely smooth, where you couldn't even tell there was even a weld there. We used flapper wheels on the end of a drill to sand the inside welds down to tank level and then we'd polish them. The manhole in the top and the ports on the back had to be welded the same way. We also ran beads on every joint and seam on the outside too but we just used a MIG for those because they didn't have to be sanitary. It took about two weeks to finish one working with two men crews if I remember correctly and that includes insulation, skin. running gear and fifth wheel mounted and ready to roll down the road. I'm a rig welder too and I only took that job when the oil field collapsed in 1986 and it held me over until I could put my rig back to work.

Food grade welding is so clean it is satisfying with the end result. I've seen 10's of thousands of feet of stainless food grade pipe work and the couple of dairy plants I used to work at. So clean.

Super helpful as an engineer designing some of these sanitary tube applications to see what the weld process should look like and things to look out for to make the design easier to weld and a better end product. The video is a great resource when you can't go bug your welders in the shop for a demo!

Welded alot of thin wall 316l tubing using this method. Alot of in-position free hand, but since you’re not using filler its easier to prop. Such a smooth and pleasant process when you get the hang of it. Great vid Matt, would love to see more of you on the channel!

A few things to remember on purging tube. Not all flow meters are alike and your readings on your flow meter have a relationship with your outlet orifice. Meaning the smaller the outlet orifice the lower the flow to maintain good pressure. Letting the purge gas blow in your ear and weld profile appearance will educate you on your flow meter settings. Also it’s best to purge from a low point if possible. Welding joints of tube together is more sensitive to hi and low pressure than welding a fitting on a piece of tube and generally welding tube to fitting or fitting to fitting takes a couple more amps than tube to tube. Also pay attention to how far your plugs are from your weld, burning them up if bad form. This gentleman is using heat tape for his outlet dam which is common with sanitary guys but sometimes expensive depending on where you find it. I’ll often use good heavy duty aluminum foil, both work fine if your weld would be to close to your outlet plug. Now y’all go get to work I’m retiring in a few more years lol.

@williamhunter277
3 жыл бұрын
It can vary but most of the time with sanitary you're not going to have a defect that isn't a cut out. Typically grinders aren't allowed as the dust can cause contamination along with embedding particles into the tubing. Remember that this stuff is either putting something in or on someone's body as the end product so contamination on any level is unacceptable.
