Sanitizing Pinecones for Rats
Find a conifer tree with pinecones and look for pinecones under the tree.
Some will be full of sand and bugs and thus need to be washed.
You can add some F10 or vinegar to the water to help sterilize the pinecones.
Make sure to rinse them well and leave them to soak.
Prepare a baking tray by lining it with aluminium foil to make clean up easier.
Preheat oven to 150 degrees Celsius.
Pinecones close up when they are soaked.
let them dry for a minute on a towel and then place them in the baking tray, giving them enough space to open up again as they dry.
Bake them in the oven for 1 to 2 hours, until dry.
Alternatively you can microwave them on low for 5 to 15 minutes, just line the microwave plate with paper towel.
Take them out and let them cool before giving them to your pets. You can give pinecones as is, or stuff them with treats.
Pinecones make interesting toys for rats, guinea pigs and rabbits. Hamsters enjoy them too, but there's some controversy on the internet whether they are safe or not.
