A visit to Goa is incomplete without visiting Old Goa. And a visit to old goa is incomplete without exploring all the surrounding churches which are located within a radius of 100 meters.
The Church of santa monica was orininaly a nunnery during the portuguese era. It is believed to be the biggest nunnery in asia during those days which could house upto 300 nuns.
The Convent and Church of Santa Monica is located next to the famous St.Augustine tower and approximately 5-10 minutes walk from the world famous Bom Jesus Basilica Church, Old Goa. This church is named after st. Augustines monther and was also used for Widows wanting to dedicate themselves to God. It also welcomed women whose husbands were travelling on expeditions or were part of the armed forces.
The foundation for the convent was laid in 1606. it took 21 years for the church to be completed. The famous church of the weeping cross is located at the south of the church.
The church has four altars, The main one dedicated to St. Monica, others to St. Augustine, Bom Jesus and the Miraculous cross.
About two decades after it was established, the convent was turned to ashes by a destructive fire. However, 15 years later, it was rebuilt and established as the only convent for nuns in the state. The nunnery was shut down in 1885 after the passing of the last nun. From 1968, the attraction functions as only a church.
