I love that they very early on establish an asshole broke the tutorial for all the other players by "kidnapping" a vital NPC, and because the game was new and the staff are otherwise occupied, nobody even noticed.

Lore wise, Kayaba killed the staff with the nervegear so nobody would hijack SAO from him. Likely that this Kayaba power tripped because of "the spoiler" and then came to his sense realizing he killed a bunch of people but kept the act going.

IMO this show really hits its stride around episodes 5-6. Once they have a chance to develop Asuna more, that's when it gets amazing. There's only so much they can do with these random SAO episodic adventures.

I think Nick should maybe just check out “Explication Points” video on the genius of SAO Abridged. It will give him a general overview of what the SWE did with the show to make it so much better that SAO proper. I personally hate SAO, but my god this abridged is amazing. It’s awesome what they were able to do with the crap they were left to work with. I think it’s on par with DBZ abridged .

I've been fascinated by the success of SAO series. I do like it but even I know that compared to other anime series, it's nowhere near the best of them (let alone the good ones). And I understand why others like you hate it, because it is very generic and lacking with character development. That said, I've always wondered why the show was such a hit with audiences, especially the light novels. And with over a decade of seeing how far the video game industry has come, I think I have an idea as to why. Look at games like Fortnite or anything that's a free-to-play battle royale game. SAO is kinda similar to that, just with RPG mechanics and leveling. It was almost like we were getting a glimpse into the future of gaming on some level, and the audience may have been able to feel that to some extent, even if they didn't know it. Or maybe I'm wrong and it's something else.

@@tjjordan4207 that’s definitely part of it. It also helps that when Netflix first blew up (early 2013), it only had six anime on it, and Sword Art Online was the only dubbed one. Many new people who were just binging Netflix (or were curious what anime was all about) went to it. With no point of reference, it’s not a particularly bad show, so it did pretty well. Sword Art Online was very much right place right time. Netflix had JUST bought the rights to distribute the works of Warner Bros Animation, and Warner Bros Animation just so happened to own the US distribution rights to Sword Art Online due to a deal they made with Sony Pictures which owned the US distribution rights for Aniplex who owned A-1 Pictures who animated SAO. Since Netflix had the rights to it, they put it on the platform, cause why not, they already have it.

If anyone's curious about the context of the very dark scene at 15:30, in the actual anime Kirito basically had his settings set to where his level was hidden to everyone else (big plothole btw how can you be in my party but you can't see my level) so Kaeda blamed him for the others getting merked when he found out he was overpowered (again makes no sense. Like its not my fault I'm bullet proof and the homies are glass cannons. Also i told them not to do it.) and then Kaeda throws himself off the bridge while mourning for Sachi.
