Nice haul for not much material! If you do this often, you guys might consider building a light box. Especially for the smaller stones. Or, just put a flashlight behind the pile and facing you, so the translucent stones will stand out. When I'm rock hounding, I always try to walk toward the Sun. It works really well for agates and jaspers too.

A much more thorough way of finding the sapphires on your next batch (and it helps with weeding out the quartz in many cases) is to barely submerge the screen in tub of water and agitate the stones left to right, then turn the screen 90 degrees and repeat the process. The idea is to suspend the rocks in water briefly while they're sloshing around. When that happens, the most dense (sapphires) will sink to the bottom and the lighter ones will stay on top. After you've done this enough to separate (or stratify) the heavier minerals from the others, you flip the screen upside down onto a tabletop quickly. All the sapphires will now be right on top of the pile. Kinda like this... kzitem.info/news/bejne/02-w2HmQn6ird4I

Garnet is what I was thinking too when he said, they were "brownish" and looked like they had "cut faces".

We buy these sapphire gravels at the Phillipsburg Sapphire Mine...so how are they garbage? Every time we buy gravels from them, we are always finding a great amount of sapphires.
